    K. Spencer, you are talking about doing a Supercheap paintjob?? I used the 3M series of primer on my ute's roof a couple of months back. Apart from doing a shit job because it was late evening and I had piss all light, and it got dew on it real bad overnight, the paint has come up trumps. The actual acrylic topcoat is Alco (or some similar named brand), but the 3M base seems to be holding up well. Used 3M GP thinner for the lot, and it seemed to go ok.

Don't expect a show car finish, however it shouldn't fall apart like the export brand chalk dust in a can.

The most important thing is to try to stick to the one brand if possible. Put simply, some paints will just not work with some other companies primer or basecoat. Theoretically they are the same product, just different brands, but the additives in each brand can differ markedly.

3M is a huge company with a reputation and market share to protect. 3M would have decided to do a bulk purchase price for SupaCheap, but not sacrifice quality, just to increase their market presence.

I will still be buying my paint at trade price from my paint supplier, so their will be no cost benefit in switching to 3M.

    cheers Chuck.

Bloody hell, you should have bought when they had it on sale. It was about half that price.

Regardless, the 3M black and white Acrylic Enamel that ive been using for the inside of doors and stuff has been good.

I pay only a few bucks more than that for a 20 litre drum of premo thinners

You guys should really cultivate a friendship at your local paint supply shop. Get trade price and WIN. Simply ask if you can get trade price, amazingly most shops will give you trade if you ask, particularly if you have been there a few times before.

    cheers Chuck.

Chuck, no doubt you paint a lot more cars than most of us?? It is unlikely you will get trade price for a one off.

Give the bootlid a nice wet rub with 800, and shoot another coat of paint. Buffing will do more damage at this stage.

Orange peel, can be too much paint, mix not thinned enough, or too much air pressure. The excess air starts to dry the paint as it exits the nozzle. Quick fix if you see orange peel before the panel dries, is to give it a blow over with straight thinners.

Thinners are used as a carrier, and a flow medium, so the thinners to paint ratio is quite important.

    cheers Chuck.

What pressure is your gun designed for?? I run around 25-30psi for either of my HVLP guns, and 22psi for my LVLP gun...

Important question. I was having a LOT of trouble spraying tonight, the paint just wouldn't feed out, even with quite a thinned out mix (non-sanding primer). Got the shits toward the end, as I knew the air settings were suitable, and the gun was capable, and drained the primer into the mixing pot, pulled the filter out of the bottom of the gravity pot, then poured her back in. Viola!! Paint came out exactly as expected.

So, my question now is... do I need the strainer at the bottom of the gravity pot?? I use one-use strainers to filter the paint whenever I mix, and they are finer than the gun strainer, so is it going to be disadvantageous to ditch it?? Or should I go and buy a dozen new gun strainers to finish the car off (3 guns) and turf them regularly??
