Hi guys, someone on these forums asked where to buy walnut shell, an abrasive usede to blast paint of panels. I found a mob that advertise in Just Cars magazine. radum.com.au they seem to have a shop in most capital cities. They also have an amazing array of tools for the workshop.

we tried using a sandblaster from supercheap ($19 item with the hose, not the hopper) and went to Roberts (agriculture, not real estate) and bought 25kg of general purpose bicarb soda, works a treat on smaller stuff, especially cleaning up engine parts, would take a while to do bigger panels, we did have probs with moistuer and the soda running out, fixed the moisture prob with another water trap in my line, gouua solve the other problem by making a gravity fed setup in stead of just sucking it out of a bucket!!

if some 1 could show me how to host up a video i will take a few quick 1s and post them up, soda worked out cheaper than the sand @ $35 for the 25kg bag,has laster a while so far, we have stripped off a few bike parts, bits of an 18rg and general stuffing round to get it setup and still have heaps left.

definately worth a try guys, soda just washes off with water, sand is just a pain to cllean up, soda wont hurt anything either.

i like this idea, ive got one of these cheap blasters. never had much luck using it with sand cause the sand was always damp. soda would definately be a good idea, better than paying some monkey to do it for ya i would imagine, i know i payed too much to get my window channels and inner doors done

pics of gravity feed setup would be good, but im imaging a beer bong strapped to the blaster filled with soda

I use walnut shells for all my blasting, but do it in a home made cabinet. I wouldn't recommend using it in something such as oldcorollas hi-tek spray booth , as it produces a mountain of dust. But i find it much faster then soda blasting (and you don't have to remove chrome etc), only problem is the shells break down and once they become fine its not so great for paint removal but perfect for general grime and oil removal and wont damage/pit your parts.

I got my bags from radium in Sydney was i think $24 for 20kgs

oh and also it doesn't cause silicosis that's always a bonus.

wat type of of unit do you run your shells thru g2??

hi krem
another little tip is to use bin liners stretched over your wheels
it saves a mountain of time cleaning off over-spray
and dont for get to put an earth clamp on your car when painting
as that reduces static that attracts dust

Im just using one of the supercheap 2.75hp belt drive compressor with a tank for 50l. Think it was about $200 –
the gun im using is pretty much identical to this one

assume it’s the same as the super cheap one yer (they all seem to be universal)

my cabinet itself is an old shop from display which is around 95cm x 100cm x 50cm for 10 bucks (It Means I can be lazy and sit down why spraying) simply used some mdf to seal up the only open end bit of Perspex for a window (not that I really needed a window most of the other sides being glass) then cut holes for the glove and gun – using gear gators to seal it up. I have bathroom extractor fan in one corner that runs into an ag drain for the dust. (cabnet came setup with lights) All up i think it cost me $30 to make.

In terms of feeding the shells I use to run the Suction Tube into a 30L bucket – now because im so lazy I just run it straight from the 20kg sack and have no problems.

Gents, is there an easy way to paint black steel (slight surface rust) without a lot of prep work? Powder coater wanted $500 to sand blast, prime and coat my hoist frame:

Hot dip gal is about $3/kg i'm told so that'd work out about the same price.

That por metal ready stuff looked like it was sprayed over rusty steel and then painted (on the video from their site)? I can do a quick scuff with rough sand paper but don't really want to spend much time on it (or cash). Doesn't need to a pristine job, but it may be left outside in th weather so i don't want it to rust.

Hit it with a wire brush/sandpaper, clean with POR Marine Clean, hit it with POR Metal Ready (or other rust converter), then paint with POR15. KBS Coatings have an Australian made version of the POR products which seems to be just as good (likely a direct copy). This would be your cheapest way to give lasting protection. Just remember to follow the instructions to the letter, and the pigment may fade (there should be a clear version available) out in the sun, but it won't affect the corrosion protection.

if it were me, i would be treating the rust with rust convertor, and then buying some hammered finish charcoal paint, like they paint trailers in, and spraying that on.
i did my trailer, 4 litres cost about $60. HiChem was the brand, is good shit.
and 1 litre of rust convertor should do that with plenty to spare.

the POR15 and Killrust and other paints like that have rust convertor in them, so no need for two steps.

Killrust etc may be cheaper than POR a well, with similar effect.
you CAN get UV stabilised pigment rust killing paint, just check sites/labels, or alternatively POR has an extra product ($) to give UV protection

Thanks. I'll check out KBS and the charcoal paint, sounds like what i need.

OC the wattyl site says its still a three step process to coat - Prep, prime and coat

the KBS three step has only one paint step. Looks like just over $250 will get me 1 litre of aquaklean, 4 litres of rustblast (might need a bit by the look of it) and 4L of paint. Good colour chioces too.

$376 for equivalent por15 product.

Any idea how much the wattyl stuff is worth? Might go to bunnings after.

White Knight also have a kill rust-like stuff and have a one-step paint (remove loose stuff, paint, done). I've been using their stuff to paint engine bay parts that don't see a lot of heat (e.g. engine mounts, random bracketry). They have both solvent-based and water-based paints.

fwiw: you can also buy hard-wearing enamel paint for white-goods - not cheap and takes ages to cure, but seems to be fairly strong.

These are obviously budget solutions for the tight-arsed among us (self included) tho shopping at Bunnings isn't always the cheapest. Some domestic/trade paint stores will have this stuff cheaper.

I think your underestimating how much POR-15 covers 4L is ALOT.

yea and 2 coats is what they recommend for cars and 3 coats if its going on a boat.
