They have their good and bad points... I somehow doubt it'll fit for width, especially with the steering box in the way, but do by all means have a good measure. Subaru engines have a bit different method of mounting, which is both good and bad in your case. Still, its the only engine I've ever removed from a car without an engine crane, AND with the bonnet still on.
(Now for some smartarse to pipe up and tell me about taking out their Camry motor with a hoist and forklift...)

Actually MrShin, I removed the 3k from my brothers Corolla with 2 helpers and we didnt have to remove the bonnet (pulled it as far back as possible and tied it to a beam)... the motor came out with no troubles 2 people lifting, one making sure nothing hit anything and all connections were disconnected.

So yeah, somebody had to be a smartarse... might as well have been me

Well I didn't need to tie the bonnet back even

Plus I bet the guy who helped you lift the engine out didn't have dreadlocks

I say have a crack. toyota owns %8.5 of suburu now anyway. the 23's have a bit more room then a 22.
If you have the funds go for it, no conversions is cheap regardless of what you pay for the engine.
Engine mounts are bugger all, bell housing can be made, first half of the scoobie housing, and the second half of the gearbox your using, weld togther and you away.

If you really want to put an EJ20 into a Toyota I'd suggest mounting it along with a subaru 2WD box north south in the back of an SW20 or AW11. You'd need to put a hump in the boot floor for the gearbox and rig up a cable shift but I think it would be a really cool conversion getting the weight way down in the chassis. Plus the engine bay is wide enough to have a chance of fitting the engine in.
