    Default MX83 cressida intercoolers

My newly converted 1JZ Cressida is currently at the exhaust shop getting the exhaust done and i hoped to get the intercooler piping done at the same time.

The issues i'm facing is that the exhaust guy looked at the cooler and said, "nup, it's too tight, i can't make pipes for that... you'll need a narrower intercooler"

The intercooler i bought is an eBay cheapy 450 x 300 x 76mm. The thing is that i've heard of people fitting 600 wide coolers in cressidas... how the hell is that possible if i can't get mine to fit?

The intercooler fits in behind the bumper no probs and seems to clear things fine... it's just that the pipe needs to do a super tight 90 degree bend straight off the cooler if it's going to fit the standard jzx81 intercooler pipes that i have.

The available coolers sizes on ebay are limited and i would like to know what everyone has got in their cars. I don't want to buy another one if before i know it will fit.

If it will physically fit I'll offer to weld up the piping for you. Just make sure it can be done by mocking up with some manrel bends first.

On another note maybe the standard JZX intercooler pipes could be modified to improve the situation.

I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

I will go down to the exhaust shop tomorrow and either bring my car home without intercooler pipes or at least take a photo of the problem.

The exhaust guy seems quite good at what he does so i would like to think he knows what he's talking about. Doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would just walk away from a job because he can't be bothered.

    Thanks for the offer Hen.

the ebay style coolers aren't the best when you want to use the factory pipe route.

People that put in the 600 wide coolers usually chop some new holes for pipework that differs from the factory jzx81 setup.

I had an ARE cooler with an inlet and outlet that allowed me to use jzx81 style piping, it worked very well since I was also able to retain the stock battery location, AC etc.

Some pics of the setup on my old car are here: http://www.rollamods.com/gallery/extreme/index.htm

it was a custom cooler from ARE in Brisbane: http://www.are.com.au

can't remember the exact dimensions but you should get an idea from the pics in the link in my previous post. The ARE cooler was bloody expensive compared to the ebay coolers.

Thats nice neat pipe work JP, what size is it? 2 1/2 inch. where you went under the front cross member, did you run it between the rail ard the radius rod bracket like the factory one or did you run behind that plate?

This is the setup mine uses, I wouldn't really recommend it though because now I don't really have any good spots for the pod filter to go.

Old pic when I was making mounts for it.

The cooler is a 600x300x100, no aircon but down the track might try to custom fit aircon back in using the JZA70 reservoir which is on the side not infront of the aircon.

    3" piping.

This is the airbox I'm making for the intake (still in development)

    slim,
any chance of using a slicone 90 to do the job as there tighter than any mandrel ive seen.
your other option would be a "tight radius donut" if your exhaust guy doesnt know what one is he shouldnt be doing custom work.

    cheers

My piping was 2.5" and did run between the rail and the radius rod bracket just like the factory piping.

ahh i was hoping that was the case as thats exactly how i want to run it on my mx73, just was not sure if the pipe would fit in there, i prefer not to cut holes in the front of my car.

I personally reckon that a 90deg silicone bend straight off the cooler would allow it to fit... but i will need to go have another look with my own eyes tomorrow. I was quite sick when i dropped the car off on Saturday and wasn't able to think clearly at the time, so my memory is a little hazy now.

Anyone know where i can buy silicone joiners and cooler parts etc... ie: not ebay... and in Melbourne.

not in melbourne but JUSTJAP.COM would be the cheapest place (2 days to ship) or try your local race/performance shop. if its quality silicone it will be around $80 each but the bok-choy stuff is around 30-40 bucks.

I have fitted a 600 x300 to 1J/MX83, but had the JZX81 factory piping to work with from the compressor outlet down to intercooler and again back up to inlet manifold, just got the required silicone reducers etc from Otomoto at Rydalmere in Sydney. It was a tight fit, but no custom pipework needed, if you PM my brother (richzx) he may be able to take some photos for you.
