Default Tuning experiences - Shell VPower 100 octane

Who has had a chance to test Shell's 100 octane VPower with 5% ethanol?

I'm interested to see how it affected fuel mixtures, and how much extra timing could be run without detonation. Has anybody retuned on the dyno?

    Cheers
    Phil

i did it 3 weeks ago from 98 mobil to jfp 100 and also shell V power racing 100 and we ended up with 6 kilowatts over the 98 mobil and also 3 degress more of ignition right across the range .
the JFP race fuel was shit as it needed 10 % more fuel and also had 10 % ethenol and didnt get any where near the 100 shell stuff

I put it in a porsche and the crap ethanol dredged up all the shit laying in the bottom of my tank. Replaced 2 filters BLACK with crap.

I've heard it works well with newer jap cars. Nothing but bad things on euro cars, but since this is a toyota forum I'd say it'd be good!

The fuel is fine but ethanol is generally bad for older cars due to its ability to hold moisture. Rots everything.

Are motec connected with shell? It seems to be more of an ad for Shell Optimax than a motec technical article.

On topic, i don't think the Optimax with ethanol is available in adelaide, we get the standard 98 octane stuff. And my brother in law (who builds race engines) uses BP Ultimate, as he has found that it is the most consistent from batch to batch.

Phil, you witnessed my experience with the stuff last week at the dyno.

I'd love to run it again as something just didn't seem quite right with the dyno runs, especially that second one (first time we've never had to add weight to the boot using people too). The seatofthepantometer and the tractionlossometer out on the highway said otherwise also

The Motec article might be a bit of an ad but it seems to be a relativley common result that they achieved.

Can't blame Motec for the sideline sales pitch, if you're prepared to take a current generation 4G63 out of an Evo to do an independent test on the engine dyno, then you probably deserve some recognition

The dyno definately didn't seem to reflect the on-road experience, midrange torque felt stronger in mine once I increased timing with the VP100, shame I forgot to make that adjustment before it went on the dyno Chatting with J the most likely cause for the excessively rich mixtures on the dyno could be attributed to running retarded timing, the more slower burning fuel probably wasn't getting full combustion. Certainly supports the argument that no extra power will be gained without extra boost or timing, since all you will get is added knock resistance with a basic fuel swap. Infact its more likely that you will drop power on a tune for 98 when running 100.

I had my car tuned on the wed before the latest Dyno day on BP98 and it pulled 134.8kw

On the dyno day with shell vpower 100 and same tune, similar temp, it pulled 137.6kw.

Not a big difference but it is still a small increase.

Only downside I have found is that it covers the back of your car in a lot of soot when you use it continuously as compared to the BP98.

I read about this gear recently,
We have a deal with BP for free fuel, so unlikely to be using this in any of our cars,
I can tell you that BP AVgas is about 10x better than shell AVgas,

I have always used shell 100ron except for a small period where I went back to BP 98. As soon as I went to BP it went richer by about .5 to 1AFR point depening on revs and boost.

I didn't change the timing between the two fuels as I was street tuning but no knock was seen from plug reading or listening with mic.

Also, running shell 100 plus martini super boost I was at the optimum timing for 15psi on my small single as when we increased timing, no knock was there but it didn't make any more power. So I am very happy with the fuel.

Shel Optimax, and Vmax, contain a high percentage of Naptha in the mix. That is the cause of the soot out the exhaust. Want a clean car, run BP98.

Many years ago, I had access to 20 litre drums of wood alcohol, mixed at about 10%, I could run the N/A 2M very happilly on 12 degrees of static timing.(recommended 8-10)

    cheers Chuck.

I've never really noted any difference between the 2... Although I typically use mobil and BP second (very few shell's left)

I've also found this to be true and offen baught off shell optimax making the car an absolout dog. Does anyone know the consistency of the new shell stuff?
