ok well ive got mine cranking but wont run unless im holding the key which seems to me similar to what happens when the balast resistor is dead.
which +ve does the +ve wire from the ignition module go to the one that normally goes to the balast resistor or the one that goes directly to the coil or both?

With the electronic ignition, you need to wire up the IGNITION 12V+ wire to the + terminal of the coil.
The starter motor wire (usually black/white) should be disconnected and not used.

    Get a multimeter to test!

ive done that and its still the same results will start but only if the key is held in the start position ive hooked the +ve from the module to the +ve on the coil and disconnected the black/white wire that goes to the balast resistor and the black/red +ve is on the +ve on the coil.

If you could post photo/s of which colour wires are connected at coil and suppressor/condensor. Would make it easier for us to diagnose.

well.....? some of the wire colours mentioned in the guide are different and my old dizzy i dont know what wires it had comming off it as the only wire connected to the dizzy when it was an 18rc was the black one which is meant to go to the tach.
come on guys this things seriously giving me a headache i need it running.
with the current wiring setup (above) ive only got power at the coil when the key is held in the cranking position and no power at 2nd position as you would normally expect so as the black/yellow +ve was connected to the coil through a balast resistor i tried hooking it to the coil +ve along with the ignition module +ve which led to a bbq'd wiring harness

Hi lowlux, my tach reads off the negative of the coil , and im not sure you need the earth from the coil neg... the idea is the spark plug provides that path
you no longer need the ballast resistor, the power IN to that should be the one you want
ignoring all colours as every old car is subtly different , there were two feeds in , one for during cranking ( battery voltage ,but much reduced due to the load of the starter ) and the ballasted feed ( around 9 v ) the idea was reduced points burn out and extra boost during cranking... keep looking for the other wire
tho i have in the past bridged / bodged the back of an ignition or two.....
    cheers

evening all, i'm part way through doing this conversion on my 18r Hiace, got an 21r electronic dizzy from U.S. ebay and converted all the inards over. Now I've just got to deal with the ignition module side of things, trying to find any R engined toyota in U.K. scrappys isnt going to happen but I chanced appon this on ebay:
TOYOTA CELICA COROLLA STARLET NEW IGNITION MODULE | eBay
    listed for
    Celica 1.6 1985-87
    Corolla 1.3 , 1.3i 1987-92
    Corolla 1.6 coupe 1985-87
    Corolla 1.6i 16v 1987-88
    Corolla 1.6i 4wd estate 1989-91
    Starlet 1.0 1992
    Starlet 1.3 1984-92
    Tercel 1986-88

would this work for what I need or am I going to have to hold out for the earlier unit?

    cheers Mat

I'd just convert to this if you don't have an ignitor already.

^ good guide there. I went to my part supplier yesterday trying to get that bosch bim024 module, doesnt seem available but something very similar was fitted to early 80's turbo ford escorts so I got one of them!
