so when ya going to do it? it has to be able to count as high as a normal odometer obviously, and i'd like a trip meter too

    PAITENT PENDING

Say using a 16X2 LCD screen. top line in each corner are trip meters and bottom line can be odometer, you'll have 16 Chars, and using a 16bit number it will be able to count to 1'677'721.5

so it will look like this
    AAAA.AXXXXBBBB.B
    DISTX1'000'000.0

    Where
    A = first trip
B = second Trip (unless you want to hide one)
    X = space

Two buttons, one to select the trip and the other to reset it, and special button hits to select the number for the odometer to start off at and number of pulses per K or something. Should start building them and sell them off lol

?? There are digital sensors that connect the original cable to the box. Speed sensor on the tranny.

    Ok..suggestions

    1) You could use an old gutted dash's cable -> square wave converter (*cough* I may have one) input that to a small micro controller and then display to a screen of your choice with a correction factor (change the 627 revs / km to what you require).

    OR...

    2) Take apart your dash and divert the square wave Speedo signal to a micro which then outputs the correct signal to the dash display...and then you can also have the micro controller display the correct odometer reading to the screen...but hey why stop there, why not have the micro log temps (water, oil, inlet, pre IC, post IC), boost, rpm and other! And take it one step further why not have it display it to your laptop in real time (bah ur getting microtech soon anyway so why bother )

However I suspect seeing as your saying odometer you're after accurate fuel economy.

How about this for a suggestion, get a digital speedo sender (at the box end, hey I know someone that has one of them too...not me this time ) and then use the microcontroller to drive a stepper motor at the correct speed into the dash?

    Some cool options

    Cheers

My supra has a digital dash, although i often wonder why the odometer is analouge :/

everything else on it is digital though, including trip monitors (a and b) etc.

pity you couldnt just hack up some other toyota dash

Wilbo, you hit the nail on the head. I'm after accurate fuel economy and an accurate idea of the kilometres I travel, so I can work out my oil changes. As cool as the stepper motor idea sounds, jimmying up a digital odometer sounds easier, or even a mechanical one that has an electronic input.

thought about a push bike computer?

I used to have one that had Kph and 2 trip meters and odo. Freakin kicked ass and I think it was only like 50 bucks. It even help your top speed.

You just input the diameer of your tyre and install a magnet and sensor (drive shaft installation?) and BAM!

Too easy. but it might not be quite the look you were after. You could hide it away in the glove box?

EDIT: I think it could read up to like 180Kph too!

Aww come on, make it happen! You know you want to

I suggest starting at step one, and that would be to tap into the existing speed signal (which I believe does come out the back of the dash, ergo easy), connect it to a micro and let it display it to a small LCD...then when you want to step it up a notch you can hit it with your spice weasel and get the same micro to drive a motor to make the mechanical part accurate as well (and then ditch the LCD )....it's not that hard is it? Got beer and a bit of leeway in terms of a timeframe? I could look into doing it for you if you have both

    Haha, there is always beer.

It all came about because my speedo is out, and it's because of the drive gear in the box, so it's not going to be changed. That requires removal of diff, tailshaft and gearbox, 3 things i'm not keen to do in a hurry.

I'm planning to either use a UZS131 (or similar) electrical speedo sender, or the factory one in the back of the dash (which would still require a cable to replace my farked one), with the signal corrected by a Jaycar signal corrector.

Of course this leaves me with a) no odometer/tripmeter or b) one that is still ~10% out.

Hence my desire for a digital odometer to ensure I still have an odometer

Yep, sounds like a good way to go about it. teh witzl might be able to suggest something (jaycar have a digi speedo but no logging as you prbly found)?

But me, I love an excuse to put a microcontroller anywhere I can

If you can come up with a microcontroller to handle a small LCD screen I could replace the factory odometer, with a button to switch between the odometer and the trip meter, then i'll take one

Edit: (read your post again )

If YOU can find an lcd to fit in that position with a datasheet or somewhere to get the info on how to drive said LCD I can't see it being hard (steal one from a new car dash?)

    Tis a good plan

Winding back of ODO's is a bastard thing to do. Mass market Digital ODO's would turn it to la-la land. I say ODO reading should be taken into a rta logbook when you go get slips. So when you go to buy a car you can see its 100% accurate.
