tried doing a clutch start or hitting the starter motor a few times? check the grounding to the starter motor, battery voltage. main fuses, ecu fuses too

sounds like a dicky alarm system.
mind you, ive had some funny shit go on on a few motors over the last couple of years, the weirdest being, pull lead off, plug spare spark plug in the end, ground spark plug (repeatedly!) no spark. put lead back on spark plug in head, engine starts...
and people think cars and mechanicals are easy to understand.

In the first post he said it cranks fine.Originally Posted by sw20r

well this one still has me stumped, which is odd
Updates:
the car still cranks fine, the battery went flat so we got a brand new one just incase.
the alarm has been pulled out and all the wiring repaired.
There is spark so there is nothing wrong with the ignition side.
The fuel pumps works, but it looks like for some reason the injectors aren't putting the fuel into the engine.
I pulled the plugs out after cranks a bit the plugs are dry. they should be soaked considering how much cranked.
I tried some aerostart, she cranks and fires, runs until the shit is gone then stalls again
So my vedict is for some reason the injectors aren't pulsing, or it has somehting to do with the Air sensor.
I can't figured it out so i am gonna call an auto elec tomorrow see if he can come look at it. but if anyone else here may have any more sugestions??

at least you still have compression then.
Does it have fuel? might sound stupid but i've seen it happen before.
Fuel not getting to cyl...Originally Posted by wiso
If it works with "start ya bastard" spray shit ... but once u stop spraying it , it will stall , means that its running on that ... and not fuel. therefore , fuel is not going to cyl
ur verdict about injectors sounds correct.
Check for power at the injectors and do a continuity check on the wires between the injector and ecu.
I have a diagram for a 96 1.8l (4g93 engine) and it shows the injectors getting their power supply from the engine control relay via fusible link F7. The coils on the other hand are powered directly from ignition switch terminal IG1, as is the fuel pump relay.
Check the engine control relay to see if you are getting power through it if you have no power at the injectors.
Hope this helps.

yeah man, i know that. that just proved that the car will run, so its a fuel issue.Originally Posted by coFF33

I bought a manual for the car today. I have done checks on the injector lines, they seem fine, they aren't grounding to the car, and they have continuity between the ecu.Originally Posted by BradW
fusable link f7? what is that. that would be smart, i didn't check the engine control relay yet. darr. I'll do that in the morning, heres hoping its buggared
edit, i checked the manual, i think i know which FL that is

Are you getting an igniton supply to the injectors?

yeaha about that, um hi! lolOriginally Posted by celica_john
ha, i am not sure, i forgot to check that
I guess the relay outline red/yellow is the power line to all the running systems. each injector, air sensor, and ISC motor.
I'll be checking that first thing in the morning.
if there is a problem hopefully it will be in that wire since that covers 2 of my suspisions

Check the Continuity within the injector as well it could be an open circuit inside the injector itself.
well this one has been solved, I got an auto elec out to tell me everything I already new and checked for, there was no injector pulse.
I found the cause for it, stupid thing actually, the roommate got a new key cut, but she didn't get the coded key, so the sensor on the ignition was locking up the standard immobiliser.
Bullshit, all this and that was all it was, think about this next time with modern cars people

Good to know you solved it wiso.
However, your original scenario didn't cover this situation - so.. be much harsher on whoever is telling you what they did - they obviously didn't tell you the whole story.
Was she driving on the new key for a while before it stopped? or she swapped keys without realising it? or she has completely no idea what she was doing?
It's funny how sometimes you can't even trust what the cream of the (intelligence) crop are telling you when you're trying to solve their problem... ask enough questions and the inconsistencies come out...

Good to see you got it sorted.
It is amazing how much easier it is to fix something when you get the story straight from the start.
I was trying to fix the brake lights on an old crappy volvo tipper once and I asked the owner if he had done anything to it or changed anything. "No I haven't done anything" was the reply. After an hour or so of trying to work out what the hell was going on (nothing in the fuse/ relay panel was labeled) I found out that the relay was missing. When I told him what the problem was he says "ah yeah, I pulled that out".
