I know it's a stupid question but have you checked the spark using a spare spark plug? Casue if you're getting a strong spark then you definitely know it's not the dizzy.
Cheers
hey guys,
my 4age corolla has suddenly conked out on me and wont start. the starter motor is turning the engine over, but it doesnt even spudder like its going to catch and start.
took off the dizzy cap, and tried to start it, but the rotor is not spinning when i try to start the car.
what can cause the rotor not to spin?

Pull the cover off and take a look
I'm with bmak.
The dizzy drives of the cam so if the cam isn't turning (ie due to a broken cam belt) then the dizzy wont turn.
How many K's on the car and has it had a cam belt replaced. It should be changed normally every 100,000kms.

i figured something like that too,
took off cam belt, belt wasnt broken, but upon further inspection, the crankshaft cog had CHEWWWWED the teeth of the belt!
so im up for a new belt!!! dammit!
any ideas on cost of a belt? or a ruff idea on labour to fit it?
from the loos of things it means a engine mount has to come off, and so does the timing belt.
sounds expensive![]()
if you get a timing belt kit there about 100 buks but you get the idlers and tensioners withit..id recommend changing these over while your there.all the serp belts and the engine mount has to come off to get to the belt to.hope i was helpful.
check the gear isnt broken on the bottom of the dizzy or of the exhuast cam. happened to me. SORRY didnt read all posts
check that your cams turn,if the belt has stripped at the crank you may have a cam seized in the head
How old is the belt?
Make sure everything turns freely before replacing it.
If it is just the belt then you are lucky.. bout 100 for belt 200-300 for belt and pulley kit and a few hours to install.. In a front wheel drive generally the engine mount will have to be taken off to replace the belt. If you don't understand cam/crank timing then don't attempt this yourself.. Get an expert to do it for you. If you line it up wrong you could just do more damage to your motor.Originally Posted by carsanactra
Although these motors are fairly free running, if belt stipped with motor running, chances are you may have bounced a valve or two. If this is the case you may be up for new valves and a head rebuild. Since you have been cranking the motor for a while to try and diagnose your starting problem i would definitely be wary of this.
To check this, you will need to line up your cam timing with a new belt, and check the motor turns freely, if you feel any resistance when turning then you may be feeling a valve hitting a piston.
As i said above, hopefully it is just the belt.
be vary careful with the timming belt instalation. if you have access to a hiost you will make it 100% easier.
I usally go: belts, timming cover top, timming cover bottom (if possible line up cam and crank) with a jack or something simular hold up the eingine and take mount off. then you can rase or lower the engine as needed. replace tensioner and pully, ( water pump if driven bye the timming belt) align belt and turn twice and make sure all marks align again. put cover and belts back on. cross fingers and start car.
Hope this helps.

Turbo flutter. : Its like a burp and a hiccup at the same time.
How did you pull the old timing belt off without taking the engine mount off if it wasn't brokenOriginally Posted by carsanactra

If you took it off, then fitting a new one won't be much extra work at all
A new belt should be sub $100

A few pointers that may or may not help:
1.Remove Drive belt(s)
2.Remove Cruise Control Actuator (if you have it)
3.Remove Engine Mount (make sure you have the engine supported from under or above)
4. Remove Water Pump Pulley (4 10mm bolts IIRC)
5. Remove Top Timing Belt cover (5 10mm bolts)
6. Get No1 Piston to TDC on compression stroke(If you dont know what this means or dont know how to do it PM me before continuing. Its Important to do right!!!!) Make sure the marks on the Cam sprockets are aligned with the two vertical marks on the rear timing cover.
7. Remove crankshaft Pulley (I find that a large screwdriver jammed in the flywheel is the best for stopping the crankshaft turning. I use a steering wheel puller to get the pulley off the shaft. Do not use a jaw type puller!) From memory its a 16mm bolt.
8. Remove lower timing covers.
9. Loosen T-Belt idler pulley (14mm bolt), push against spring tension and temporarily tighten. You can now slip the belts off the sprockets.
10. When refitting, make sure the belt guide on the crankshaft has the cupped side facing out.
11. When you have everything back together rotate the crankshaft by hand 720deg. (2 full revolutions) if you feel ANY resistance, dont force it, recheck your timing! You could be hitting the valves with your pistons.
12. Measure the T-Belt deflection midway between the two cam pulleys, it should be 4-6mm
NB. Make sure the knock pins on the camshafts are pointing at 12'o'clock on the intake cam and 5 o'clock on the exhaust cam. Antother tip is to double check that you have TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke. Serious damage can occur if you have it the other way round. Also, make sure you keep the new belt free of oil, petrol, contaminants etc. It is an integral part of your engine and you want it to have as easy a life as possible.
Dont start the engine until you are positive the timing is right and belt is fitted correctly. If any of this sounds too hard or is unintelligible to you, get a mechanic to do it! You dont want to fark this up! Having said that, as long as you are vaguely mechanically competent, its not that hard a job. Take your time and think about it and you should be sweet.
Good luck dude.
What do you mean by "cam belt". Do you mean the belt that runs off your crankshaft and runs your WP and Alt? This is not the timing belt, just so you know.Originally Posted by carsanactra
Before you fark around changing the timing belt, check for little things like earth to the dizzy, are you getting spark etc. It could be something small that you are overlooking. If it is your TB I would be checking that a cam hasnt seized in the head too.
