ahahah, yeh sorry bout that man. i was all for the 1ggte, but then i met a guy wif a 3tgteu and he seemed to think they are crap... although he didnt exactly give me a reason why, jus said they are...
i will most likely still end up wif one, but im a bit indecisive atm...
plus, i didnt have the ability to spend that much at the time... work had jus cut bak my shifts, so i was strapped...
but if an rg pops up for cheap enough, then ill grab one, less ofcourse i get this full time job doin I.T... then i may be able to jump up a lil and get a 1ggte... ohh the posibilities...
i spoke to matt(L Plater) today and if all goes well, ill end up wif his dead RG... so ill slowly, but eventually rebuild that and stick it in.. hopefully
sarr,
jason

That's what you'd think, but I spent months looking for a plain old 18R-C to get my RA23 back on the road. Eventually I gave up and forked out for the rebuilt 18R-G - it's heaps more than I wanted to spend but at least it's an actual engine and it will actually fit. Apparently all the 18R-C's have been turned into landfill.Originally Posted by brett_celicacoupe

Norbie: how much did it end up costing u to rebuild the rg?
cause im wanting to go a similar way... given i can pick up this dead one...![]()
1G's kick ass.![]()
ive had 3 motors in the RA40 body and the 1ggte was the best of them by far.
the 18rc was reliable, very slow and reasonabley smooth.
the 18rg had okay power, was a bit lumpy and used quite a bit of fuel.
the 1ggte has impressive power, very smooth, good sound, and reasonable on fuel
sounds like the 3tgteu guy was jealous that his engine didnt make 210hp from factory![]()
must be just brisbane or something cause there is oodles up here. ive had about 5 18rc's and 2 18rg's in my posession in the past 2 years.Originally Posted by Norbie

The cheapest engine upgrade is a 1G of some description (either N/A, turbo or supercharged).

Born-Enthusiast,
The 1G's are a 2 litre straight six. They came in three variations. 1G-GE (N/A), 1G-GTE (Turbo) and 1G-GZE (Supercharged)
More info here: http://www.abautos.com.au/specs/engines.html
They came in a variety of cars, 80's Soarers and Celicas, Coronas etc.
It's a 2l inline six from a multitude of cars, most engines are from a Supra or Soarer.Originally Posted by Born-Enthusiast

I didn't rebuild the engine, I bought it off o_man_ra23 who rebuilt it recently. I'm sure he'd be glad to enlighten you.Originally Posted by Smokey228
I'm in the process of rebuilding my other 18R-G though. The cost so far is a touch over $1000... and all I've bought is a set of rods! Next purchase is chain guides and tensioners, which is over $500.![]()

looking at that info wouldn't it be better to just rebuild the 18rg or buy a new one i mean i know someone who has one with 45mm webbers and 21/2" extractors said he would sell it to me for $1200(mates rates tho) how much how much would a 1g cost...oh how easy is the conversion between the 18 and the 1g
Norbie, who are you getting your chains and guides through? I am also after a new set and will probably go through Toyota unless you know of somewhere else.
Witzl knows a dude in NZ who's sending the gear over for us. Get in contact him if you want further info.![]()

Jason, and anyone else who wants to know rough costs for rebuilding an 18RG...
I just rebuilt mine (just bed in the rings half an hour ago), so my only costs were parts and machining:
- Machining, inc acid dip & hone block + head surface grind: ~$400
- Hastings rings: ~$100
- 4 new valves + synching + grinding shims: $100
- Gasket set: ~$240
- Head studs: $200
- Mains: ~$80
- Bigends: ~$60
And if you need new chains, guides or pistons... You'll be rather out of pocket!
On top of this list there are consumables that always seem to add up like oil, filters, gasket goop, assembly lube, extra gasket paper for the ones not included in the gasket set, new radiator hoses, water pump etc etc...
