I think you are not alone there, all of us have a set of tensioners and guides that are out of specifications but we are hoping someone can refurbish them in the future.
I know that I have two sets that need attention.

Maybe you should let Steve answer his own questionsOriginally Posted by o_man_ra23
If piston manufacturers were supermarkets, Aria's are the equivelent of the $2 shop. I'm not saying they are not a worthwhile product but generally they are considered the forged piston of choice for those who build to a budget and not to an end result.

I just said the quality of them was known... ie not a significant variable... never said they were the ducks nuts. I really cant see how that post screams for attention... just how it can be misinterpreted. To go to a small shop (in this case, not an internationally recognised piston maker) and order a set of custom pistons, you are running a risk. With risk is the potential for significant gain, so you could well get a much higher quality product. But the flipside of risk is that you can get a dud. Risk management is about making a compromise between the potential for a better product, and the chance of a dud. And before you say 'But the Witzl got them from a source who he knew' or similar, I dont know the shop making them... not everyone does, so their reputation isnt as wide spread.
So please, read the wording of my posts. Sorry to sound harsh too... just the way I can sound.

Hi all...hope your easter break is going well.
I have decided that on my long weekend i'll work on my car..Assembly of my engine is going well, picked up my head yesterday (it needed some welding around the water jackets) It is now starting to look like an engine
This arvo i measured up my shims and valve clearances..and yes due to the fact im putting in some new cams...i need some shims. Does anyone know the best/cheapest/easiest place to source these shims ???
Any help will be much appreciated..thanks in advance..
cheers leso
Hey there,
I'll try and dig up the number for the guy I called, he can supply all different sizes.
The engineering guys out at yamanta near the wollies meat place were the ones that gave me the contact.
So if I can't dig it up before I head off to the inlaws tonight try them on tuesday.
Dave
(PS I will enventually get around to meet you ...with a six pack

Nice
Did you end up getting the guides recoated or did you find new ones?
The main thing stopping me with my rebuild apart from time and money, is getting all the necessary bits together like updated guides, mine were shagged completely.
I had a look in some of my celica paperwork tonight, but no luck on the number, I know I have it in my work contacts so when i get back to work on tuesday I can post it.

...got one guide redone/rebonded , was a nice job as well @ $55 i'm very happy..![]()

Hi,
Does anyone know what CFM a 40mm Solex/Mikuni flows? Just incase I decide to throw a Holley downdraught carby on the 18RG... as you do
Renzo.
Leso,
Have you got more details about the recoating/rebinding of your guide.
I looked into it and $55 was no where near the estimates that I got.
I couldn't find anyone willing to buy in the correct compound to only redo about five or six guides, it would have cost too much.
I really hope you got a good deal here and won't be let down by a les than ideal solution.

YelloRolla,
I was originally looking at getting 3TC pistons an modifying the valve cutouts, then 20r/22R pistons and Arias had the bet range of all these pistons and Atomic Speedware had good price at the time.
The serice I experienced was good enough for me to decide to get the full HD customs through them.
We also have a set of 1980s 12:1CR 92 bore 18RG pistons from a sprint car (thanks Mr. DOHC)that held up fine and they were Arias too.
Due to the requirements I sent I figure that the msot likely thing to let me down is the material rather than design, So I should be ok there.
I heard somewhere that Special Piston Services imported their blanks from the US, is that correct or am I listening the to wrong people?

So thats where those 12s went. A mate of mine who is a fitter/machinist and does backyard machining with the gear from his old engine business sourced me 18RG valve guides for $5 eachhe said the parts came from Brisneyland and werent hard to get. Then its just a matter of pressing out the old ones, and pressing in the new ones. So $55 for one sounds about right, but I shouldnt think it would cost much more than $100 for the lot.

Are we talking valve guides or chain guides here?
I'm talking about chain guides.
