Yeah, I figured it that way... but was just pointing out that it was funny how its written... makes it look that way.

Go back to ya hippy van and forget about it

Or go cart some bricks around in the RA25

    Hi,

Some of the notes have 18R egnine serial numbers and they seem to be all over the place. That's when I decided to forget putting in the notes as it was getting too confusing.

Leave my Kombi out of this.... it's a cool hippy van. And there will be no brick carrying in the cay (any more).

Lucky I'm not up in Qld or I'd have to go for a drive and kick a few butts!

haha, even if you were in QLD, you probably wouldnt be in driving distance to get to me... takes me most of a day to get to brisbane... would take you a week And then once your here, you have to catch me... dunno if your RA25 can keep up at jogging pace

I dunno if I'm alone here, but I was liking this thread for it's 18RG goodness, now we've gotta sift through all sorts of (admittedly, amusing) antics to find any toyo-twincam-tech

No offence to anyone involved, but any chance we could try to stick on topic, which is sharing info and assistance to those persistant enough to still be shovelling coal into their RG?

I think I have solved the question of the "extra oil drain cover thingy"
having a look at an early 18r picture as seen below, the engines that had absolutely no polution gear had a crankcase breather in the location you descibed. Maybe in later blocks they put a cover plate over this breather until they had used up the early block castings.
Look at the picture below and item 5.

Okay, so bare with me while i explain a few things...

    Pic 1:
Red circled bits are for balance lines between the manifold runners, these WERE all joined together, and going to a vacuum gauge in cab. we since have balanced the runners so they run perfectly, and have blocked them off.
Blue Circled bits i don't understand, they definatly draw air into the chambers, if you leave them open the car will just about stall (leaning out). these tubes
WERE connected to the hose with the GREEN arrow, which then ran to the thing in pic 3 and 4. we've blocked these off aswell, 'cause i can't see why i would want air being drawn from the sump for the intake.

what is the proper setup for these pipes? i can't view that mammoth 18RG diagram page 'cause of our connection

Pic 2: this is the breather plate which you all know, i was under the impression that the green tubes in pic 1 were suppose to go through here.

Pic 3: Aren't those the hottest extractors you've ever seen?...... *ahem* this is where that funny looking thing lives, behind the extractors, the tube from pic one (Green arrow) leads to.

Pic 4: this is a close up shot of that drain back valve thing

The intake is meant to suck air from the crankcase, such that it vents the crankcase, and burns any evaporated oil in the air (so it doesnt get into the atmosphere). They are very similar to PCV and should be connected. You can run them, along with the PCV, into an oil catch can and vent to atmo if you dont want air from the crankcase going into your intake.

yeah you definitely have an early 18R block converted to 18R-G.

that crankcase vent on the exhaust side is complete sealed in the casting on the 18R-G blocks i have in the garage.

owen - that's what i suspected.... any reason i need a crank case vent ASWELL as a cam cover vent (which goes to atmo)?

karl - the block number is consistent with an original 18RG block, ie if your looking at the block number from the drivers side, it is upside down...

This is contradictory to the story of 18R and 18RG blocks being identical aside from the orientation of the engine number.

Not doubting your claim Witzl, but if it's true that means i've been under false assumptions all these years... and i've learned my one new thing for today

Can anyone else add strength to either side of this argument?

The two blocks are identical.Except of course the upside down eng number on the RG.

Crankcase vent is there to prevent pressure build up in the sump.If you plug all the vents it wont take long for the sump to blow apart(looks good when it does )
With the cam cover vent I'd say Toyota just wanted to make sure that all excess pressures were vented.
    Cheers Brett.

The very early 18r and blocks had no pollution gear, maybe not even a pcv valve, hence the crankcase gases were vented to the atmosphere by the item no 5 in the lower picture I posted. I would suggest that if you have a pcv valve on your 18rg you can dispence with the early type breather. PCV valves are designed to cause a negative pressure in the crancase to remove fumes from piston ring blow by and recirculate them into the intake manifold.

What better way to do it than from the block... where they originate?? I would say get as good a crankcase ventillation as possible... Maybe its because of the 7000rpm+ redlines these engines had that meant the second vent was a benefit.
