    interesting
just went out in the cold and had a look at the 253 head and the 270 head and neither of them have the little tapped lug i can see in your picture.
so that must mean that something wasn't required in a later revision
is it possibly something that mounts on it from the early 18rg induction to the later 18rg induction (sorry i don't know the mikuni/carbie/solex thing but might it haave been for one of those to mount securely to)?

Freaking genius!! Considering I am running cable I shall be filing that little bugger off ASAP. At least that clears that up.

    +rep for you my friend.

If I don't use a balance tube isn't that going to make it difficult to balance the carbies and affect fuel consumption?

Is that "balance tube" really for that purpouse? (balancing). I thought it was just for getting oil fumes into the engine from valve and crank-case zones.

I changed from crabies to ITBs and forgot about it

I'll wait till I hear from one of the resident experts regarding the balance tube.

In relation to filing the tab off, I was going to be using one of the 250 heads which doesn't have that tab (but it's stuffed) so I can't see it being an issue considering I am running a cable throttle. I don't have anything that needs to bolt to it either.

The thing sitting on the intake manifold?
    wtf does that do?
Ive got 42mm dcoe's on a 18rg manifold that i intend to use, but it has nothing like that, neither did the 2tg manfold the webers came off.
