i had a quick search, but didn't find much on cam mismatching.
As 18rg...gu. geu cams can be interchanged. What scenario would suit, if you had each to choose from.
Meaning, if U had 231's, 250's, 253's & 270's. Swap intakes & exhaust cams.
Knowing 231's are the most aggressive, if you could change the Intake cam and or the exhaust cam, what scenario should U use?
So use a 231 exhaust cam & maybe a 270 intake cam. Would there be some good results? Also what would U recommend?

Gents, added new BPR6ey plugs, sorted fuel pumps, wiring & injector issues. She runs with all cylinders firing..Yeh.
but some questions.
Details 1st, spark gap - 0.008 inch, timing 12 deg, fuel pressure 38 psi.
my dizzy air gap was at .028 min and adjusted to max as per book. But the change does not give me 54 dwell angle. why?
Do I really need to open the gap more to get the dwell req'd, it seems so.
Also my fuel ratios are still at 10, hoping that a re calibration of the LC1 will bring that in line to 13-14.7.
At 12 deg, my idle is at 1200RPM at op temp. I tried to drop the idle with idle screw on throddle body, but even at closed all the way it still sits high. what else can I do there?

Air gap? Do you have electronic ignition? If so, dwell should be controlled by the module. If you mean points gap, disregard this line.
Yeah, recalibrate the LC1 and see how you go. If the sensor has been in a rich mixture for too long or been turned on for long periods without the engine running it may have killed the sensor. Alternatively maybe your car is still running rich. Can you check the wideband in another car?
You might have a vacuum leak which is causing the high idle. Check all the connections, also do you have the AC idle up on the side? Maybe stuck open?

yes i do have electronic ignition. So air gap should be adjusted.
to adjust, is the bigger the gap the higher the dwell? At max spec i'm at 40
Could the advance idle vacumme hoses and diaphram be faulty or connected incorrectly to cause this to be out?
the advance hose to the intake and the retard hose to the BVS (bimetal vacumme switching)
I believe i have the advance and retard vacumme hoses correct.
I have no air con, but the ac idle is there but blocked off, no i have one connection to a vacumme gauge sorry.
i'll check for leaks ans see how that goes.
i will re calibrate the LC1 on the week end.

Dwell is controlled by the module, adjusting the air gap would have not much difference to dwell angle, trigger wheel just lets the module know rpm and when to fire. Module will control dwell angle/current charge time according to rpm and coil current. Electronic ignition you don't need to set the dwell angle, just leave it alone. Make sure the air gap is as per specs, which is just ensuring the gap is between 0.2 and 0.4mm or thereabouts). (This is to ensure the module will be able to sense it and not hit anything)

Don't forget the early 231 cams are the 3 bolt ones not the pin/cover/center bolt type.
a lot less precise timing and none adjustable.
I would run the most aggressive intake cam of the 250/251/270(measure lobe height with calipers) and the same on the ex.
Unless someone might be interested in a set of regrinds.![]()
he's not cheap but its still well under half of what a proper set would cost.

Does anybody know off hand if the inlet and exhaust cams are the same in a 88270
Pagie84a - yes the 88270 cams are the same. Well mine were.
will8115 - Even though the *****31's are single bolt, providing the set up with mix matching works, i dont see why you can't also mix single bolt and adjustable gears.
Normal running would suggest the cams to be straight up position or eg. advance cam one touth either way for more torque.
I want to do regrinds on my spare *****870 cams, but i wanted to know the *****31 cams grind details to make it worth while.
If the ****31's are 272 with 10.5 lift, then a worth while cam would be 289 - 295 max 10.5 lift, providing the engine is a little bit warm..
Cam tech have these details on their site.
