@ lowlux jeez thats harsh , hope the rest of it isnt in the sump . on the positive side the low compression ratio could be gods way of telling you to get a big turbo
there are some pistons on ebay at the moment.... .99c start price last time i looked

Me personally? No! My fabricating experience consits of a battery bracket that took 3 hours to make. Even getting a proffessional to make one would be a costly pain in the butt, especially if I want to try and use stock filters. For me personally, anything to do with improving or modifying the car comes down to several factors: Cost; Performance gain; Effort required; Lifespan of component. so A) it would cost too much to get fabbed up, B) the performance gain would not be worth the high cost C) It would be a big stuff around getting it designed and working leak-free in a timely fashion D) I will probably be upgrading to a late model engine in a few years anyway....

Thanks o_man and 3jcelica for your theories.

The oil relief valve in the oil filter is only a bypass if the filter blocks up so oil pressure will not drop and since fitting the oil cooler, this unit was removed and take offs fitted for the remote filter housing.

It is actually the valve in the oil pump pick up housing jamming, as 3jcelica eluded to, the alloy housing and steel valve had come to grief. when this is stick open it drops oil back into the inlet side of the pump and looses pressure. Found another cleaned it up and will have it running again on Sunday.

To 2004lowlux, I have a set of 4, 9.7 rg pistons on conrods you can have for a bottle of Turkey. That should fix your compression problem.

Willo, I was actually eluding to the same issue as 3j - he just explained it more betterer

Might pull my relief valve apart before reinstalling (might also have blasting material in there after being cleaned)

    o_man_ra23,

when I did mine the first time I pulled it apart cleaned it, band new piston and spring. Still did not help the situation. I then changed to a brand new 3t pump upper body (still able to retain the 3tgte lower body resulting in a high volume pump still) this was cast iron body. Point being sometime a clean may help but for an engine like yours or mine I would suggest a new body for insurance.

Roger, I am unsure that the 18R oil filter housing is likely to be available (though admit I haven't checked for one). Stripping it down for an inspection and checking tolerances might be the best bet for me.

Hi guys, just wondering, I've bought an 18RG that been bored out to 2.2 with hyper pistons in it at apparently 9.2 CR, but nothing else done to it in terms of performance work, and I've got an 88270 head (I'm not sure what head the new motor has as its in freight). I have a guy that'll rebuild the head for 300, and I'm hoping the new motor's head will be a 210 or 250 according to someone's cam specs they posted up somewhere here. Would it be worthwhile to rebuild the 88270 and put it on with the new motor's cams, or will the difference be minimal in comparison to the price of getting work done? I wont be turboing, 'maybe' a little SC14 as there's one around the corner from me for cheap

Chevy, the 88270 head, if the valves are in good condition, would be the go. I would use that, with the new motor's cams (assuming the new head is something other than an 88270). One big advantage of the 88270 is that the aftermarket stainless valves available are to suit that head, so it is less work getting them fitted if you do need new valves (the intake valves from SW Motorsport are still nearly 1mm oversized, but these can be cut in without replacing the seats)

    Hello Chevy

Use 88270 head, but try to find cams to it from older head like 88230.
That way you get best result.

Older cam has more accressive profile than newer ones.
And of course newer (88270) head is better than old ones.

Sounds like more trouble than whats its worth with the motor already built, for my budget anyway. Doesn't the combustion chamber diameter matter compared to cylinder bore?

Combustion chamber diameter in the 18R-G series doesn't matter with comparison to the total bore diameter, as the dome in the piston does not go all the way to the edges. Despite increasing the bore from 88.5mm to 92mm, there was no requirement to modify the combustion chamber.
