Perhaps he gave it WOT and ended up back in 1977, and has been waiting 34 years to make that post.

You know Witzy, you are probably right there... that would tick you off. However realistically, that is caused by the user not knowing the full power of the 18R-G, not from the 18R-G itself...

Mate. I've got an old one sitting in my old's backyard, so it's had some weather. Did a bearing after blowing the oil filter housing. From memory it is stock with the 88230 head. Not sure what it's like inside now, but you are welcome to it. It's in mittagong. I'm in Germany until late sept but can touch base then if you are interested.

i havent experienced the power of it just yet as i cant get it to start again! thought id change the head gasket seeing as it had been cracked open after getting really good comp readings at around the 160-170 mark dunno what happened must have forgot to put the other 120 psi back in the two front cylinders or somthing last comp test saw 50 psi in 1 and 2 very odd. but it does run finally on carby cleaner i think its got bad fuel or it doesnt like E10.

when i said i hate the 18rg i meant the one ive got so dont take it to heart guys

18R-G's don't like E10. Full stop. It is too shit. I lent my RA23 to my wife once when it was low on fuel (back when she was my girlfriend), gave her $20 and told her to put some premium in it. She did and it started running like a dog until I ran that fuel out and filled up with some BP premium. I won't buy United fuel ever again after that.

Have you done a leak down test yet? See if it is the rings, head gasket, or valves.

Goes to show it's about the local operator...United 98 down here is the best 98 in Canberra. When they finally get their E85 bowser i'll start using their stuff rather than the Caltex stuff.

My 18rg has the engine number stamped upside down but the first letters/numbers are 10R ( or what looks like a 0 with a flat bottom. ) Is something strange going on or is there a logical explaination for this oddity?

The casting on the block has 11411-33011 with another number above it which is hard to make out in the driveway with a torch

10R was one of the original twin cams. From memory they were based on the 9R? It was given its own designation, unlike the single cam-twin cam shared designations of the 2T, 3T, 18R, 4A and others.

if you have a 10R, that is a pretty rare engine indeed.

I'm not so sure that is what it is though as it has an 18rg head. ( 210 ) From what i've read on the net , the 8r became the 10r along the way to becoming the 18rg (wiki)

I'll get some pics up soon but i think it might just be an import engine with a different code ...maybe?

It is either a 10R or an 18R-G. There is every chance the heads are the same, as the 18R-G was a further development of the 10R, and the 18R-C was a further development to the 8R (and shared many internal components)
