This was my friend Mike's GTV when we were stationed in Okinawa Japan. I just stumbled on this old picture from 1984.

So I checked the oil in my motor today.. It was on 3 quarters full. I topped it up to full and started it up. No knocking.. Drove it down the rd and parked it in the drive.. Still no knock.. Maybe started to hear a slight rattle as the oil heated up? I'm thinking maybe I haven't buggered a bearing? Although it was knocking at around 3000rpm when I came in the pits..
I never once saw the oil light come on during the night either..

I have cheap ass gulf western oil in it to :/ maybe that's the issue.. And maybe the oil got crazy hot from the thrashing? Thinking I should give it an oil change with quality oil and see what happens? If that's all good think I'll invest in an oil cooler.. Anyone running one on their 18rg? Would help with running extra oil and also keep oil temps down..
    Thoughts?

Change your oil filter and oil. Split the old oil filter and look for metal to verify if you had done any damage to your engine.

That is the cheap inspection method, however, I would pull that Oil Pan and inspect the bearing one by one.

Does anybody have any photos of the jap factory throttle linkages for the 18rg in a RA23/28 celica? I have noticed that everybody seems to be running a cable setup but i am curious as to how they were run from the factory. The spare parts manuals show diagrams of the 18R-C linkages and 18R-GU linkages and part numbers as being the same for all pieces except the final linkage that connects to the carb/s but i cant see how this works as the carbies are on different sides of the engine.

The original linkage is sloppier than certain ladies you will find hanging out at the Cross. About as attractive too

A neatly done cable setup is the way to go

    What Justen said.

I have a picture of the linkage setup at home though, will post up if I remember.

Well i'm sure it will go nicely with the motor then lol. The quirkiness of the linkage system intrigues me.

Best image I have of the linkages I had on mine. I changed them out for cables when I went to Weber 45s.

Cable is the way to go. I had an airfilter clip dislodge from the filter and stick into the linkage at WOT. Luckily all that happened was a 180 before I managed to turn the engine off.

Thanks Glen. It does seem the way to go considering i have struggled previously to find any photos of the original linkage even with the magic of google. Even if i wanted to run the linkage i would probably have trouble finding one.
Whats the go with running the cable? i have not looked closely at the pedal setup but is it just a matter of finding a car from the wreckers with a similar foot pedal arrangement with cable and using that?

http://www.rmcarburetors.net/ has the cable setup you need along with many other Solex parts.

Crap the first engine with its small fine thread head bolts and high car had head gasket issues and required the shim gaskets. It revved hard, water pump ran too fast and if you ever stopped babying your engine you might find out why Toyota got Yamaha to fix the crappy alloy head design of the 210 and make it work and last. 210 head lasted 90,000 230 head hit 150,000 and never been off.

    They used rods.

Yeah that's as horrible as I remember it being. Mine had that, although slightly modded to suit the 45mm webbers I ran. A decent cable setup is visually neater and works much better
