    Hi,

You mean 18R-G or just an 18-R... 'cos that's a big call when someone yearns for an 18-R upgrade!

Hey guys, is there a difference between a w50 and W55/58 clutch fork? - Reason im asking is because i have just put a 18RG into my RT118, slave cylinder doesn't suit the fork (wont go through the hole on the fork) i know i can get a newer one with a mushroom shaped head, but now i need to pull the engine back out and need to replace rear main seal, (get sump baffled while im at it, and massage chassis rail so i can use extractors), and thought i will just change the fork over. Also, I have a bunch of different 18RG heads, 2 x 253's, 2 x 250's and a 270. Which would be the pick? wont be EFI.

Would the 253 pistons be ok? Are these high comp? Obviously wouldnt be as good as 210 pistons

As I have detailed in several areas, there was a cutoff - around 1977-78 where there was a change in the clutch fork design for the W50 from a cast iron unit to a pressed steel one. The cast iron unit used an adjustable slave cylinder, while the later unit used the non-adjustable. The W55 onward boxes came out after this change, and thus all use the same later slave cylinder.

Easiest fix is to get the later slave cylinder. I tried putting an early fork into a W58 and it didn't work. Being hydraulic, it negates the requirements for an adjuster anyway, so just one more failure point you can remove. Asking for one from an RT142 will net you a new one from your favourite parts supplier.

spent the weekend welding and grinding ,might be a little smaller and have no dipstick nice, just need to get all the abraisive grit out and choose a sealer for the odd pin hole ...so would a 22 r sump have fit or are they different again ?

    Different again.

To test for pinholes in a sump, dry it out completely inside and out, then pour in some kerosene and run it around to where all the welding has been. Any pinholes will show up as wet patches on the outside. I like to circle these with a paint pen then re-weld them, grind back, and test again. I don't like the thought of relying upon a sealer to hold onto the walls of the sump (gasket sealer is different, it has something holding it in place). Bits of sealer clogging up your sump pickup isn't a good thing.

got a quick question, my rocker cover has a small leak and im going to get a new gasket for it, ive had both rubber and cork gaskets, and i think the cork ones are a million times better, except it seems only the rubber ones are available, what does everyone on here do about that? i find the rubber ones absolute rubbish, is there a company we know of that manufacturers them in cork? i looked for cork sheet but couldnt find it in dimensions big enough

I wouldn't use a cork one if you paid me to. Where is it leaking?? If it is leaking up the back at the half moons, you probably need to change them out as they would have gone hard.

    Hi,

i've had plenty of 18rg's and none of them have ever had a cork gasket up there. All had rubber gaskets and none of em leaked through them. Definitely check the half moons though - i have use gasket goop on them before though.....

Gasket goo just never seemed to work properly for me. Bought new half moons from Toyota for about $13 each from memory. Was over a year ago now, but they are supple as.

    Hi,

Got cork on The 88 and she's never leaked. Got to repaint the cam cover at some stage so I got a rubber gasket now in readiness. I hope it's as good as the cork one.
