Yep will do some more fault finding tomorrow, I will treat it to some new plugs, my thoughts are either the coil or the dizzy is not up to the task. I have a spare coil so I will change that out and if no joy I may change out the dizzy. I only have a cheap electric fuel pump fitted and am also concerned about the amount of fuel it can deliver. Maybe a high volume low pressure job is the way to go
    Thanks

good fuel supply is important, but won't make your dizzy jump around. Also check for bad connections/earths.

AHHH the sweet sound of an RG rocketing along the road. Found a bad connection at the dizzy plug. NO spluttering, just the sweet sound of RG goodness.

Hoping someone can help me with some details on the crankcase ventilation on the 18RG. I put my RG back in recently and installed the crankcase ventilation hoses to the air box and intake manifold, and when I went to tune it up was struggling to contain the idle speed. I noticed there was a lot of air passing throught the crankcase and effectively bypassing the carbs. Is there normally some sort of restriction in one of the lines to control the amount of air passing through the crankcase?

You should have a pcv valve (positive crankcase ventilation valve) fitted between the crankcase ventilator (that little square plate near the front of the motor under the intake manifold) and the intake manifold balance tube.

Rodger posted an excellent description of the PCV system two pages ago.

Is the PCV clean and working properly?
I had a problem with a mini pod filter drawing too much air through the cam cover,
forcing the PCV to stay open.
What sort of filter do you have attached to the airbox?

    edit: slowmods is slow.

Thanks guys I'll fish out the valve and pop it back in. I thought it was just a one way valve but now I think about it, it was more a full flow one way and restricted flow the other.

I'm running the standard air box with I think its a hilux air filter (standard papery style filter material)

Fitment of the thermostat itself is the same as the 18R-C (and many others), and the stock 18R-C temp will work fine. You can try different temp thermostats if you know what your doing, but it isn't necessary. Thermostat housing upper piece is the same as the KE30.

Seems like i can't get my PCV valve working consistantly. I tried cleaning it and even tried lubing it with WD40 to try and free it up but still inconsistant. Does anyone have a part number for the PCV valve? I'll try a new one and if that don't work i'll just plumb it in between the filter and the carbs.

I had much similar problems to you here when using a GM Delco ignitor ony my 18RGE with megasquirt. The Delco ignitor did the VR signal conditioning... and when the revs went up above 2000-3000rpm, i would get misses and backfires.. BADLY.
When i ditched the Delco ignitor and did the VR signal conditioning inside the megasquirt, the problem went away.

Ditch the Bosch ignitor i rekon. A 21R-C or 22R-E ignitor is easy to find at your local wreckers, and is perfectly pocket sized
    Hi,

I now have a 22RE Coil and Ignitor. Can someone point me in the direction of thread on how to wire it in? I know there was one someweher, but after 20mins of searching I can't find it!

    Thanks.

PCV valve, 12204-31012, I think, I'll have to double check this one.

Finally got my PCV Valve working properly and tried another tune only to find the two thermo fans i'm running are sucking the +ve down from 14.4V to 13V at the battery and from 13.5V to 12.3V at the coil. This then turns an RG idling at 1400 RPM into an RG idling at 600 RPM and covering my driveway with black crap.
Hopefully a dedicated +ve for the coil will help. Going to suck the 96RON out of the tank and get some proper premium in there too. Had to put 96 in to get home last time I was out.
Just want to get an acceptable tune so I can drive my car without any coughing or spluttering.
