    Default machining 1ggte harmonic balancer

The clearance between the harmonic balancer/crank pulley and my radiator is under 10mm. Im wondering if its ok to machine off a section of the crank pulley, the most fwd section as it is not used. Main concerns are obviously the pulley no longer being balanced but its only a street car and the world isnt perfect. Thoughts and suggestions pls!

i know its been done 4, any decent machinist can do it,

if you just lop the front off i dont see why it would be so unbalanced?

I have a decent lathe at home and my old man is a fitter by trade. It will only take about 5 mins to do

I was actually going to machine out the middle pulley and then move the fwd pulley backwards to make only 2 pulleys!

Yep it will work quite fine. Will not upset the balance of it.I have done it with the 18RG ones and they work well. It's interesting how much drag those extra pulleys make.
    Less weight as well.
    Cheers Brett.

if i was to do this i would get the motor rebalanced.
its quite a weight change, and this will affect the balance....i think.
talk to a machinist and see what they say.
if it makes no difference i will do it with mine
as i dont even get 5 mm to the radiator.
and have already rubbed thru 1 rad, but only coz the radiator moved lol

it would be PITA to have to pull the bottom end out of the motor to rebalance it - just for machining down the outer pulley of the HB?

fwiw: thje 18RG pulleys dont have the rubber isolation section that you find on more modern units.

yes it would be a pain in the arse. if i had thought of it i would ahve got it done when i had my motor balanced.
im not sure whether just removing mass and then getting the pulley re-balanced will affect the overall balance of they motor as they are all bal;anced as individual items..
    maybe it wont?
if it doesnt, i might look into this...

It doesn't upset the balance of things as was said they are balanced separately to the crank.

Normally all the parts (crankshaft, flywheel and pulley) are balanced separatelly and then checked if all the parts match together. So, assuming flywheel and cranckshaft is in balance, you can get your pulley balanced separatedly. I got mine 1G custom pulley that way. And it was all good! So go for it.

Sorry I dont have translator so dont mind about bad English!

PS. how front is your motor? I have atleast 10cm's space between pulley and radiator...

When balanced, mot of the material (if any) i drilled away from the front. Machining the front pulley away will upset the balance as some of the holes will/may continue through and others won't.

Cost me about 20 bucks to have a pulley machined and rebalanced at Ross harmonic balancers in blacktown.
