Found it. http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...1788#post81788
This is all referring to an LSD centre though. Would it make a difference if it was an open centre?
Also, that says that early hilux have this clearance problem but later model (maybe RN50 onwards) won't. As I have a Hiace housing and have no idea what model it is from I can see this being a very difficult job. Even giving all this info. to a diff shop. If you haven't worked it out by now I am a diff noob![]()
Maybe better to just find a bloody 4.1 centre from a Hilux and whack that in. I was sure Richard aka Lance said that he has a 3.7:1. Just rang wreckers and they said they don't exist![]()

Chris, the best way is to buy an LSD out of a hilux - if it costs $600 so be it. Ratio is generally either 4.1 or 4.3. Youre going to pay $400 for a supra or cressida LSD, and then theres the big expensre of the conversion. I dare say if you fork out for a hilux one you can do the lot yourself...to my knowledge they bolt straight over. i bought a grande lsd the other day with a 3.9 gearset for $300...but its pointless using it when theres hilux ones out there...even a g series tru trac is only $800 i think...and ill give you as 4.3 gearset if you want.Originally Posted by chris davey
he doesnt need a LSD tho, he can just use a open centre and lock it up
if u cant use the cressida diff chris its only $50 really, you could probably even resell it for more
gabba isnt really that far from my place, i can get this diff and drop it to them, see if someone can drop off the housing for you
JZX83+ FMIC+ Twin 2.5" dumps to 3"+ FCD+ 2800rpm stallie+ 14psi - LSD - good tyres = 12.85 @105.58
The boobs are back
I had to machine down the pinion, but that was to clear the chunky jza70 torsen carrier. You might get away with just different bearings and a 3mm spacer ring for the crownwheel, but you wont know until its all dummied up.
this is an interesting thread i gotta keep an eye on this as i sure my hliux centre won't hold up for long once i get the 2jz running.
If the lux diff is the same strength as the Cressy diff then I dont see a problem with taking power. 1jz747 is running 137mph at 34xxlbs with little problems (that I know of)
I'll be running a lux diff in my car with 2jz
yep, as Phil said I don't need the LSD. I think I will just buy it and see how it goes. Probably best to go to Gabba as they have actually done it even if they don't really remember. Thanks for the help guys.
Thanks for the offer on the 4.3 Blake but that is still way too short for me. I would still have to run these gay truck tyres (no drag radial options that fit). Other thing is that these tall ratio hilux diffs seem to be rare as rocking horse shit so that doesn't help.
Pulling the centre out of the hiace diff tonight to measure up axles, bearings and spline counts.
few tips
you can tell if you need a spacer without dummy fitting it by measuring from the edge that ring gear sits on to the centre of the little axle meggigy that extends into the centre housing, this is the offset of the centre
too bad your not in SA the guy who did mine showed me how to do it and didn't charge cos i helped him with some other stuff and he said he was chuffed by how much i had done myself, (ps i owe it to brett celica coupe's diff table, as i showed him what wa compatible with what)
get an lsd, do it now rather than later, beef it up with some washers, then without the spring inside you want it wound up so that a bar of length 3ft with all your mite will crack it, then put the spring in. i think its about 450Nm depending on how strong you are
in order to mesh the diff properly i used the powered dye that they use in stencilcrete with oil and painted it on the ring gear, then when you roll it around you can see if youve meshed it properly by the mark it leaves, you want about 10thou of play in it
when you put your bearings on DONT PRESS ON BEARINGS, cos you cant feel it, heat your old bearings up with an oxy torch and knock them off, then take the old bearing cup and weld it on the end of a bit of pipe, this way when you go to whack the new bearings on the force is on the bearing cup not the outer assemmbly it will be on the new bearings cup
dont fall into the trap of putting a block of timber on the bearing assembly and whacking it on, cos it will strech and fall apart and you'll have rollers everywhere and find yourself back a cbc for new set
hope that helps, let me know if you need some diagrams and i'll see what i can do
craig
chris if you atre just swapping the gearset, you need different bearings as the hilux is a lot smaller, so it is still going to cost in the vicinity of $300...You're better off just forking the money for a centre out of a given hilux, but to my knowledge ratios dont come much taller than 4.1...buy a centre and bolt it in yourself...i think this is the only way for you to go.
Don't mind paying some money to get new bearings as I know it will be good to go at least. If I could find a 4.1 hilux centre I may just use it but I really would rather go too tall than too short as I am extremely sick of the gears I currently have. 4.1's would be ok but as I know that 3.9's work very well and my car being a bit lighter than the cressida I would prefer to have a bit taller again rather than shorter as there is less load on the engine. If I find one cheapish I will grab it though![]()
i did my whole diff conversion for just over that! the bits are out there and they can be cheap, i spose it just a takes the patience of a pov arse uni student to get them
theres hiluxes at abc wreckers at oxley with lsds in the front at least....give them a call for a price.Originally Posted by chris davey
the 4WD wreckers at capalaba had quite a range of 'luxes (most in the yard as they'd been rolled so a fair range of bits available - plus their LN106 calipers were $5 cheaper than ABC
ive got a hilux diff sitting in the shed you can have for $100.00 its out of a 85 diesal 4runner its the front diff but im sure the gears are all the same.and i doubt itd be very worn.
