Front and rear diffs in live axle hiluxes are the same.
wouldn't the front gears be mated to go in the reverse direction to the rear gearset?
in my head (i haven't drawn it on paper), i would have thought that for the crown wheel and pinion t o go in the same directions they would have to be reverse sets, one that faces forwards, one that faces back (so you couldn't use a fron't mated gearset in a rear housing).
The centre i don't know however i assume they would probably be the same.

Jealousy is a curse
i think the front diff may have an offset that wont suit your trans tunnel
so you are happily saying i could pull the pumpkin (all of the diff centre including CW&P, lsd or open wheeler centre and the housing around these things) off of the front of a hilux and then put it onto the rear axle?Originally Posted by madmont

I did a search and can't for the life of me remember where I saw it but there was a topic on this exactly and for some reason they said it can't be done. There was talk about the direction the driveshafts spin and if the diff is going to be backwards because of the different direction or if the transfer case does all the work. I think Cool1 gave the answer. But the answer was that it wouldn't work.
What are the ratios like in the front of a 4wd hilux anyway? Same short ratios as the rear?
4wd diesels are like 4.8 or 5.2 or some shit like that
they could just inslatt the diff center upside down, that'd work
JZX83+ FMIC+ Twin 2.5" dumps to 3"+ FCD+ 2800rpm stallie+ 14psi - LSD - good tyres = 12.85 @105.58
The boobs are back
if its a drama, why not sell the hiace diff and just install a ford 9" - it will cost a little more but you can have any ratio under the sun, and they are tough as fuck...
just a suggestion if you dont want to spend another $500 on top of your purchase price of that hiace diff.
Robbo,
The 1999 2WD Automatic Hilux has a 3.7:1 ratio. I used these genuine toyota gears in my RN27 Hilux housing. Yes the diff codes are different but 8" is 8" no matter what else you call it !
I will attempting the Cressida gears into Hilux centre swap myself but won't be usig anything other than the gear set form the cressida.
As for IRS into live axle - It can be done my F series crown live axle runs the MA61LSD centre, it needs a unique bearings (Ie not crown or MA61) but works a treat and any GOOD diff place should be able to do it for you.

Blake: 9" was an option but everything is so expensive. 60's model diff housings going for $1000 on ebay. I don't have that sort of money to spend on it at this stage. If I can get these 3.9 gears in which it appears I can as long as I take it to someone good then I will be very happy. The Hiace diff made for an xt130 corona is fate! There is no way I am selling it now!![]()
Toyman: thanks for confirming. I had told wreckers this in the past and they insisted that no hilux ever came out with a 3.7:1Oh well, the 3.9's will be a VAST improvement over the current 4.6's

dude youre not listening - the bearing size between the pinion etc are "DIFFERENT". This means you have to swap the bearings or get custom ones made. Its still a costly exercise unless you buy the whole centre and swap it. F series has nothing to do with g series anyway.Originally Posted by TheToyman75
Robbo,
Only a retard would rebuild a 20+ year old diff centre without changing the bearings so its hardly an issue ???? Besides new bearing are generally cheaper than a complete hilux centre and MX83 diffs are cheap as shit from almost any wrecker. So if its going to cost me less to get what I want tell me again where the issue is
If the Pinion gear from an MX83 wont fit once I get it all appart then big deal, I am out some time and $50 !
You say your diff rebuild cost $550 and suggest a 9 inch conversion as a "easier alternative" are you highA nine inch is a heavier diff that costs more to buy let alone convert to fit. Their is a huge range of hilux ratio's available if you actually look, both genuine Toyota and aftermarket.

sorry to dredge up an old thread....but im going to try and fit a G series hilux locked centre (CENTRE ONLY) into my G285 IRS rear housing...as the LSD doesnt suit my needs...
after reading this thread am I correct to assume it wont just bolt in?
I plan on using my G285 crownwheel and pinion and just fitting the centre...what do I need to swap over to the hilux centre?

bring it around sometime and i'll show you how to measure it up, other than that its as easy as getting the right bearings and someone to mesh it
i dunno what the hell g285 is but yeah you can swop the matching crown and pinnion for sure, but it sounds like you're just changing the very centre of the centre as long as its the right size all you need to do unbolt it put it in, bolt it up then mesh
give us ring if youre unsure
ok well after rego tomorrow ive got to rip the exhaust off on saturday so I might rip the diff out too and bring both of them round...
yes just the centre
as in im pulling JUST the LSD out and putting in a locked open centre from a hilux G series
