Getting a few silvertops with managment problems lately. AFM can be a huge problem, but usually presents as hesitation at certain load points. Worth a shot though if you can swap a known good one in or have yours tested. Igniter well grounded? These earth through their own case not the loom. Fuel pressure ok? This would let it idle but die when opened up.
Sorry if these are too basic but sometimes you have to go back to basics.![]()

Can anyone tell me just how fast an ae82 with a silvertop 20v should go? 0-100kmh, how many seconds?
fairly quick, 7-8 secs, something like a 15.5-16sec qtr mile.
0 - 100 km/h in mine is 11.5 - 12 seconds. I haven't bothered with a quater mile.
A mate of mine put a series II AE101 20V into his AE82 sedan without AC or PS, it was as quick as my MY01 WRX 0-100 if I did a normal launch. 12 secs is pretty slow.
everyone raves about 20vs
but they are only a touch faster than the 100kw
only way they feel fast is if you use a 6 speed
ill prob get bagged for saying this but when u have wired up over 100 silvetops u get to know them
I think the exact same thing.
20v are ok. sure they rev high but dont make much more power up there anyway.
wiring is a pain in ass if you go aftermarket ecu unless u ditch the vvti.
Slightly hard to find parts.
RWD format bigger pain in ass.
16v FTW!
Well, i now have an ae82 20v that does 0 - 100km/h in 11.5 seconds. Excuse my language but I'm F*****g angry.
Timings right. It drives smoothly. Has no power at low revs and has a small kick at and above 4000 rpm. Feels slower than my 86kw 16v though. (If I remember correctly.)
do u have the o2 sensor hooked up
or does the o2 sensor have power to heat it up
i have been told that by some customers that after they hooked the o2 sensors up they gained abit down low
What do you mean by a small kickat 4000rpm? That's about where the vvt switches, is it possible that's causing his problem? If it was reversed somehow? I don't think that's possible though... Did you use the factory loom or re-wire it completely?

No o2 sensor yet but that won't effect power. I've doubled checked the wiring for the VVT and tested the solenoid. It switches at about 4 - 4.5 rpm so It must be working to some extent. Maybe it's blocked up with gunk. Is that possible?
IIRC the VVT should kick in at 3000 and off at 6000 if it doesnt kick in then i cant see you loosing a shiteload of power
