Quick question thats related.
Both sides of my RA28 (quaterpanels & doors) have around 4mm (a lot) of filler on them the whole way along.
Is that a sign of a good previous paint job, or a crappy one?
The magnet theory is a myth, is is usless unless the filler is very thick

Sounds like your car was a repairable write off, panels all smashed up.
After panel beating it back as good as possible, you need to use body fill whether is a cheapo or good job. So it doesnt say much.
But almost half a centimeter is a shit load if putty, covering both sides of the car. And it is not the kind of thing that last for ever. Also, deep dents such as 4mm loose there strength and will tend to flex when heated/cooled, which will make the putty crack off and giving you similar things to whats in the pics on page 1.

This car has been rallied to, so it hasnt had an easy life.
Ive seen plenty of those US car restoration TV shows, and they all seem to place a layer of filler over the entire body work?

Was on the phone to Ian and he said possibly the cracks can be caused from something on the inside hitting the bonnet.... my ears then pricked up and my giant sub box that flies around the boot (tried to fix it to the tank with velcro but doesn't really work) came to mind.... it is deffinentaly a possibility. God damb doof doof![]()

Mate that is done purely to avoid any inperfection. The bog is then sanded back to a bees dick width and is mainly done to have complete control of the finished surface..You could also say its precautionary.Much easier to throw some bog over what seems to be a straight panel and sand it back than lay a coat of paint over the body only to find out it has some high and low spots here and there..Originally Posted by MWP
Joey,,,you and ya doof doof mateIt makes sense, but id say she still let go in an area of bog...either way to fix it properly its off with the boot lid to strip her back, its not that hard man, just use common sense, look up some spray painting sites and do some re search...Trust me if a noob like me can do a spray job anyone can...
Good luck.

Yeh looks like im gonna go down the track or stripping her back and painting her (with the help of ian "the expeirienced"). Can all this be done in a day (i know it takes atleast 2 weeks for the paint to fully dry) or does it have to be spread out, and is it driveable during the freshly painted period?

My advice is to borrow or buy the shittest boot lid you can find while your original is drying.
Dont take the easy way out! even the amount of bugs that will stick to the fucker will shit you,not to mention the fingerprints you will leave on it when trying to put the bugger back on..

Thanks for the advice, will put up a wanted thread for the replacment boot lid (would normally just go to the wreckers but i have a feeling they would charge way over what it would be worth). Will give an update on how it going when i get stuck into it. Cheers for all the help guys.
Thanks, Joey

Yeah, and the putty applied to the whole car is a spray. Search "Primer/Filler", and as Riceburna said its all sanded back, leaving the smallest of dents filled in.

acrylic only takes about 10 min untill it is touch dry
the first stage is to determine what condition the boot lid is in
worst case it will take 2 hrs to repair and prime
1/2 hr to paint and drink beer
4hrs talking celicas
