4agte tapping noise when idling

Hey Guys,

Yesterday I noticed that my 4agte (series II afm GZE) was making an audible tapping noise when idling. It's very noticable when sitting in the car and it goes away if I take the rev's above about 3k. It sounds like it's coming from the head...

Also another noise started yesterday when driving 5k+ w/ 6psi of boost @ WOT. It sounds like a high pitched beep/tone, it may be coming from around the passenger footwell I think it may be the turbo on the other side of the firewall but I am unsure. I have noticed smoke coming from the botton of the turbo on the exhaust side.

I am running castrol 0-40w oil and there is plenty of oil in the car.

Any idea's?

regarding the high pitched noise, have you got a 1 way valve in the brake booster line so the booster doesn't get pressurised?

I didn't swap the booster over on my 1J swap into my chaser (JZX81 booster has a 1-way valve built in) and when above 7-8psi it would make a high pitched buzzing/beeping noise from up under the dash/firewall area. Took me ages to figure it out.. Started by checking the turbo setup for boost leaks, then by checking all the electrical stuff under the dash and kick panel for buzzers, then by removing as many dash/electrical items to isolate the noise (no cluster, extra control modules, etc etc). Finally found a post on the old toymods forums that suggested a 1-way valve... The old 1GGTE in the car had a metal valve in the hardpipe that runs across the firewall, I swapped that pipe in and the noise was gone

JP, I'm not running a valve at the moment but did think of it.

I'll be getting one asap now, that noise scared the crappers outa me! It only reared it's head after I advanced the timing a bit (it was quite retarded).

check the shim clearances that could quite possibly be the issue, although why would it stop after 3k rpm.... dunno but check em anyway

Yeah, thats my bet. Probably stops after 3 grand cause it can't be heard over the exhaust and induction noise

id say if he is revving to 3k rpm without oil pressure then tappet/shim-bucket noise is the least of his worries

oil pressure is lowest at idle and then builds with rpm..
the noise could be due to poor oil supply, and then when the oil pump gets a few revs in it, it can finally supply enough.
pressure is bled off around 3000-4000 if th epump is working correctly.

could be a broken/loose pickup.. could be heaps of things..

exactly.. if the oil pressure is that low, then there could be serious damage.. so it is worth checking
fwiw, big ends don't always make noise until there is very little or no oil pressure..

what happens if you back off the timing to what it was before?

edit, check for exhaust leaks also.

can you get a stethoscope and narrow down the location of the noise?

could just be the injectors though.

from a 1UZ, 1G and 7M, that ive heard, they all seem to tick when idleing.

my 18rg has a similar tapping noise that also is affected by revs.

happened after a clutch kick or two at wakefield. i suspect something in the gear box. goes away by 2500-3000rpm but thats because i think the noise is drowned out by engine/exhaust.

But to that my clutch also has no play its on or off these days ... which i doubt is something your experiencing... so i guess that points back to your motor.

i have a very similar problem with the tapping at idle, and eventually disappears as revs increase (may be due to exhaust out-doing the tapping). The only difference that i've noticed with mine is that it does it after it's been warmed up. The engine (4age bigport) has been fully rebuilt though with a new oil pump and everything so i'm not sure what it may be
