I dont have pic right now from under the skirt but these pistons have similar surface underneath...
AS I said earlier... it looks cast to me!
And a Rod from the same engine, as I had the camera out....

. it was definitely not made using a die, so could only have been made with a consumable plug, so that rules out forging and semi-solid forming, as well as pressure die-casting...which leaves... normal sand casting...

to add to that discussion, according to my training, there is more than just cast or forged...
forged usually refers to a kinetic swaging process, as used to form rods and cranks and the like.
casting is a relatively static process, where you wait for things to solidify.
pressure casting is also static, with a press applying pressure to the liquid (ie, pressure die cast) and can be rightly called casting.
this "semi-solid forging" term i believe is incorrect, as it is not as much a kinetic swaging process, and more of a press. it is not cast, as the material doesn't enter the mould in a full semi-solid state, the tight temperature control of the mould controls the proportion of solid/liquid once the metal enters.
it is not a static press, so i don't believe it should be called casting.
the item is not cast into ingot and then forged, or cast into semi-finished form and then forged, so it cannot be called "semi-forged" or "partially forged" (and is misleading to use the term forged)
what you would technically call it is semi-solid pressing (since the process is closer to what you do when pressing bearings onto axles, than it is to using a lump or sledgehammer), but the name given to it is semi-solid forming.. the reason for this is that the process used to form the shape is not casting or forging, and is slightly different to what people usually associate with pressing (press bent etc), so forming is a better term.
anyway, thats my take on it and my reasons for using the term "semi-solid formed" instead of "semi-solid forged"

The verdict is:
4A-GZE pistons are NOT CAST, and are definitely stronger than a cast piston. Be they "forged", "semi-solid pressed" or whatever... they are just fucken better!!
<end>
...... butt scratcher?!
Yes, gathered that now.
Question is, are they markedly better than a 1g, and it would appear that they are formed in a better way to a 1g piston.
So, the next question is, are they interchangable. hence I need to get a few.
