If you don't even own the car yet I'd be forgetting about doing an engine conversion and taking a look at what is available that people have already poured money into. I know there is at least two 1GGTE RA23's and one 3SGE RA23 for sale on the forums right now.

    Hi,

Hehehe.... yeah, good idea to get the car first.

In any event, as mentioned, the 2T-G, 18R-G and even the 3T-G are getting long in the tooth, and it may be prudent for you to seek a later model engine where there are more parts and availability.

However, should you go the old fashioned way, the above three engines are all good, robust, reliable and can be easily modified for more power.

both of these have their issues, the 3s you will haev to fab up a mount for one side (cant remember which one) the 4age you can either move the mounts on the crossmember or fab up new mounts, i have pics and measurements in the link in my sig

also with the 3s yiou will have to change the box, a t50 isnt strong enough (assuming ta22) the w50 should cope nicely.(assuming ra23)

umm yeah dont think about a conversion untill you have the car because that will determine which way you go

    thanks guys.

i have a choice of either car ta22 with 2tg or ra23 with a mildly worked 18rg. both need a lot of work on the body/interia/suspension etc just deciding which one is the better to start with???

    They'll both serve you well...

It'll just come down to your preference on shape!

If you prefer the TA22 front, bonnet, and dash, then go with a TA22...

Otherwise, if you prefer the RA23 front, bonnet, and dash, then go with an RA23...

Obviously they're not the only body differences, but they are among the first seen visually!

I agree that you should look at all the 1st gens for sale, and pick up the best one you can possibly get rather than being biased about certain engine conversions at this stage. It is getting harder to find clean, straight rust-free examples of these cars, which would be your ideal starting point.

I do notice however no-one has pointed out the TA22 is slightly lighter, smaller and a little more nimble in the handling department? Having said that, the 23s and 28s have a bigger engine bay which would give you a wider choice of engines to transplant....

Honestly, you need to decide a few things first before you go ahead with this any further, im afraid your first post has been a little vague about what youre trying to do, and thus people will throw their opinions around forever and a day.

Which model do you like the best? (shape, style, size etc)
What sort of power do you want out of it? (what are you using the car for?)
What sort of skills do you have to be doing certain engine conversions?
How much time do you have?
HOW MUCH PATIENCE DO YOU HAVE?

IMO i think the power differences between the 18RG and 2TG from factory is negligible considering the 2TG with less power is in a lighter car.

And you can still get just about all the parts for these engines if you know where to look Despite the fact that having some decent power in your car is every man (and some girls ) dream, these engines can still be fairly quick little units IF the builder knows what he/she is doing with them, and they are tuned correctly. Its still nice to see a classic with its intended engine.

PS there is A LOT of information on these forums and the old ones regarding these engines. Perhaps you should do some research on them, all the info is there
    Good luck with your aspirations

    Thanks sillycar chick.

yeah should have been more specific in the first thread. I acctually don't have aprerance as i have had a ta22 with a mildly worked 2tg. i agree with the orginal engine preferance as that is what i am trying to accomplish. i would like to have a worked version of either and really just want to know how may people have got either of these engines in their car and they have been built tough.

    thanks for your help.

My opinion would be to have a TA22 with a fully worked 3/2T-G hybrid, twin side draught solexs and extractors etc. Am keen to see a decent example of one....

    But hey, im biased

PS if you havent already, you should start up a rides thread
