have spoken to Chopin, and it seems that the alternator belt has broken or came loose, and somehow penerated into the timing belt cover and jammed itself inbetween a pulley and timing belt. causing the timing belt to skip a tooth or 2, hence why the car wont start.

luckily the 3SGE is a non impact engine otherwise you would need a new one, it will be just a matter of replacing the belts. I have given Chopin a tow truck number and a mechanics number to get it repaired, hope it goes well man, keep up updated.

this is the 1st time i have ever heard such a thing happen, u must be cursed or something mate.

Wow that is massively unlucky... there must've been a pre-existing defect in the timing belt cover for it to get chewed through and then to dislodge the timing belt itself!

gotta wait for tmr b4 i can do anything, not sure if i can get a mechanic to look at it, cause honestly im really low on cash. What i think i'll do is to tow it home and let it sit for a while I've still got to pay off the car itself.

Talk about unlucky. But i'm convinced that this may be something i can fix if i get help from someone and hopefully be allowed to borrow a manual for the car. I cant afford to give it to mechanics.

This is really a supprise, caught me when i just repayed 1/2 the loan for the car.

the timing belt cover was fine, i dont really understand how the hell it chewed its way in there. *twilight zone music*

i have a haynes manual i have never used that you can borrow Chopin, i would help you do it mate, but a back injury i have had for the last month doesnt seem to wanna go away. and its my 1st week back at work.

i like the fact that you want to do it yourself though.

call me and you can come and pick it up.

Kewl bro, well the very reason i bought the car is because i wanna learn how to do things. This is unfortunate, but a good oportunity to learn. I'll pick it up on Sat morning if possible.

Where can i get cheap Timing belt, alternator belt, and the other one that snapped too. i'm just hopeing that the engine aint warped. But since karl said its a non impact type.. i can only hope this is true.

    The valves won't be bent dude - it's a *non-interference* head.

The 'other' belt you refer to is the power steering pump drive belt. You can get all of those belts from repco or super cheap or any other automotive parts place like that, or you can get them from a toyota genuine parts place if you feel like emptying your wallet

Expect to pay about $150 max for the three belts i think.

You will also want to get a new timing belt cover - scour some wreckers! U-Pull-It or Pick'n'Pay less or whatever you have in your state will usually have a few bent ST162s lying around.

Just getting to the timing belt is a bit of a bastard, then doing the timing itself can be a pain. If you need any tips or tricks gimme a pm.

yeah, its a non-interferance engine, but unfortuantely those covers are a PAIN IN THE ROYAL RECTUM to get off with the engine in the car.. good luck mate

Thats just really bad luck dude. The belt must've been rubbing on the timing belt cover for it to cut through. Must've eventually cut right through and gotten caught in the timing belt?

Good luck finding a timing belt cover for a gen 2 from a ST182. The covers are different from those on the gen 2 in the aus delivered MR2. A gen 1 lower cover might fit? If you're strapped for cash you could go ghetto and try patching it up with sheet metal and pop rivets.

EDIT: remembered what i was going to post about in the first place. The timing belt change procedure for the gen 2 is different to the gen 1. The gen 2 has a spring loaded piston type tensioner which you need to compress in a vice and lock open before reinstalling the belt. I'm sure karl or somebody on here will be able to talk you through it.

have you got a mate with a falcon / commodore / 4wd with a towbar? Hiring a tandem trailer is only about $60 p/day.
