Default external wastegate....which one??? HELP NEEDED!

    hey guys,

with my ne manifold arriving today, and will be making room for an external gate to be fitted,

i need to know about external wastegate's....and what size,

im going to be running just a t28 turbo (with the internal gate welded shut) at about 10-14psi, ....on the 1ggte, (just till i can afford another turbo!)

im not loaded with cash, and dont want to shell out $6-700 for a turbosmart gate,

been advised that the ebay $200 gates arent to bad, and work fine for the $$$ value.

what size do you reckon would be what i need?, 38-40mm???

im completely lost in theis area, and need advice!, will be looking to buy a gate within a couple of weeks,

cheers for all help, and +rep reward!

only get a screamer pipe if you want to attract lots of attention and be really noisy. it will piss you off after a fortnight of driving.

just intergrate the gate pipe back into the main pipe

why are you not using the built-in wastegate?

it will simplify the dump design and on that side of the engine bay you don't have much room.

external gate is what you go for when you start to run high levels of boost

    Hi,

i was asking similar noobish q's a few weeks ago, so sharing the love...

an external wastegate will give you a more complicated and more expensive setup, but... it will also give you much better results in terms of accuracy

    a 38mm wastegate will be plentyful, but a 40mm surely wouldn't hurt

as for the screamer pipe, its personal preference really and also how early you expect your turbo to come on full boost. Im going to run a super t70 on a hi comp 2.2L which means i probably wont be making massive power/boost until mid revs, so i will be able to drive around normally throught the city without attracting every cop to defect me, but then when i want i can stick my boot into it and make a sh*t loads of noise. If you want to see an example of this go here:

    hope that helps

for a T28 sized turbo, id go a 38mm wastegate. bang for buck, you can get tial 38mm jobbies for resonable amount of money.

To run screamer or not is personal preference. They are very loud, and not to mention illegal on street cars. So in the long run, plumb it back. Turbo spool sounds so much better anyways.

Try and avoid the ebay wastegates if you can. A wastegate is one area you dont want to skimp on. As one quick overboost because of a jammed wastegate is enough to make cactus of your engine. If you do go an ebay wastegate, id go 2 for redundency. But at that price might as well buy brand name.

ok, the cars main priority is track racing now...but will still see the odd weekend out,

so screamer pipe on the street wont be too bad as i dont flat chat it that much

found out its a t3...what size i dont yet know, but hopefully know soon....

plus when it comes to getting a better turbo later its cheaper to get one without a internal gate, (bout $300 difference) so going external probably pays for it self,

any one got some good contact for external gates?.....

been looking on ebay, n yeah they have the tial ones for round the $300 mark

Yep-Tial 38 will do the job fine.

Don't skimp on a wastegate-the difference will only be 100-200 anyway.

If you pick up a current Garrett catalog, it lists Tial wastegates. I have a suspicion Tial may be actually part of the Honeywell empire. They make gooood bits of gear.

Agreed, Tial are one of the best and 38mm will be the perfect size.

    I'm going a 44mm wastegate, but could i get away with a 38mm wastegate?

I too would like to know if a 38mm gate is do-able on a GT35R...

From my understanding, If you're running high boost levels you should be able to get away with the smaller gate due to less gas bypassing. However with low boost levels, there will be lots more gas to bypass, hence larger gate required to prevent spiking etc.

    Anyone care to advise???

    Cheers

    well:

    force = pressure / area

you would think the bigger the area the more accurate its going to be and the more volume of air its going to displace. With smaller gates you run the risk of slightly overboosting before it settles back to where you want it, but im sure if you were going through with turbo mods you wouldnt have it running right on the edge anyways... would you?

    i hope not...

    so yes one would assume

    higher boost = more force

therefore less need for larger wastegate

dont quote me as im not in the know just like you guys
