Yep, Rolin imports does S13 rear assemblies for about $300 with everything but struts... Freight is a killer, but it's still cheap. Installing it is the long, painfully expensive part. Some other nice designs I've come across while procrastinating last night are the new MX5 and RX8 multi-link setups. IIRC, cool1 was playing with the jag control blade setup a while ago, but this is heavy, wide, big and heavy (did I mention heavy?). Many an option for he who pioneers... Which will hopefully be me, but going to south america in less than a month and returning in february deems that unlikely... Oh, and track width problems with the silvia stuff? Neg offset wheels and huge flares are definitely the way forward

www.hachiroku.com.au has a good members ride of improvedae86 putting irs into his ae86.. he had to weld on some pretty big flares to get it to fit.

Take into account that a ra23/8 runs a narrower diff than ae86 standard...... = big flares

wide track AND neg offset wheels??... did you mention HUGE?

Mazda MX5 cradles are often used in lower powered kit cars, but I don't think they are terribly strong diff-wise. Not so great for turbo 1UZ goodness, but probably be a good option for a lightweight revvy racecar though

RX8 sounds too wide and too hard to find, but happy for someone to prove me wrong

I'm liking this... with so many suggestions from ppl, it doesn't sound like we will be left between 2 or 3 crappy options! good news all round!

At this stage it looks like we have a couple of choices with all of the following:

    - relatively cheap and easy to find parts
    - relatively light parts
    - reasonably narrow track
    - wishbone IRS
    - aftermarket options

I like the sound of MX5 for the lightweight applications where unsprung weight counts, s13 for the heavyweight applications where strength counts

Much track FTW In reality, the wide track will negate the need for neg offset, but I'm still hot on the look. I'll be doing the IRS, then the flares, then I can think about which offset and width my 15" SSR MkIII's will need to be to fill the guards.

Ok so I've been meaning to post this since just after this thread was written, but better late than never... (My excuse for being lazy)

After driving behind several WRXs and noticing they have a rather similar track to the RA28s I thought how about the Subaru Impreza WRX IRS?

It's well made, strong, would be easily found, and is quite a modern design... (from what I know)

I'm struggling to find all the info, but a '99 WRX has a rear track of 1460mm so the actual width of the setup would be less...

I'll keep trying to find other specs, but if anyone else has any info, please feel free to add...

I think I'll make it a 09 project (or until I have a decent garage)

    haha... MY08 RA28 development!

I'm still keen for this swapsie too, and as blashphematic (is that a word?) as it might be, I might try to see how easy the whole front/rear s13 swap will be. Rear cradle will give IRS and a decent diff in the back with discs standard, while if the s13 front crossmember will be "modifiable" to bolt in to an RA28, it may just happen to bring with it the s13 front control arms, front struts (with cheap coilovers), big brakes (with easy access to even bigger brakes), R&P power steering rack and (this is the killer ) mounts already there for a cheap non-toyota 2L turbo engine that has plenty of go fast bits available, proven reliablilty to a certain extent, and a nice 5-spd manual already attached!

I know there is an s13 front suspension thread, but I haven't kept up to date with it to see if anyone has swapped the whole shabang in.

Think it is a pretty cost affective and sensible option... If you can handle looking outside the "family"
