    Hi Simon,
Good to see you still around

I'm still keen to try converting to R&P in my TA22, however I'm now in the middle of a major overhaul & have already now custom mounted a new engine (yes 3T-GTE I fitted back in 1992 is long gone) & would not want to replace the cross member with a KE70 one.

See attached pic for what's sitting in there (including repositioning firewall) now.TA22.JPG

As my car is essentially a "low-budget" sports sedan now, I'm keen to get R&P fitted & when I get some time again, will start playing around with a cost effective / good bang-for-buck suspension upgrade from the 1992-designed coilover setup while I'm there.

Keen to hear any suggestions, as to what others would do to keep the standard crossmember + R&P upgrade.

    Cheers,
    David.

    Thanks David,
Just lately I've got re-energized with my TA22 after letting in sit in the garage for close to 10 years. Gonna rebuild my 3TGTE soon and also keen on R&P steering while I'm at it.

Like you I'm keen to see what others have done to make things easier...I've started my site again, but on Face book, name is "classic celicas and more".

After being a huge slackass I finally got around to installing the R'n'P, such a simple bolt in job.. It looks so shmick and beautiful. Highly recommend it.

Ok, you fitted one of Sams kits. We're there any issues and how does it feel compared to the old set up?

Looks like you have an RA28? I think it's an easier fit as the track is the same as the donor, unfortunately a TA22 is narrower....

Mate that's installed in a TA22.. Not a mass fan of the fastback RA28's. Compared to the old setup it's sharp and responsive. Anything is better than steeringbox.

Radar, ok cool. I thought it was an RA28 because the cross member isn't from a TA22?

Sounds like a good upgrade. What engine and gearbox are you running? I'd like to do the same but struggling to understand why I can't use a TA22 cross member and en weld the brackets on from the KE70...

Are there any clearance issues with the gearbox etc from using a different cross member?

you cant use the ke70 rack on a ta22 xmbr because the rack pivots are wider than the LCA pivots on the 22 xmbr. this mismatch, along with some other factors influence bump steer.

so to fix this u have to disassemble the rack and chop it down so the pivots line up.

    OR...

You could do it properly and shorten the ke70 xmbr (aka SamQ conversion) which keeps all the ke70 geometry the same as toyota designed it. throw in the ke70 LCA's for a little more neg camber and some AE86 power steering knuckles to give quicker steering. this is a proven set up in many ta22's including my own. why you'd do it any other way is beyond me.

Sheepo thanks. This makes sense now. Maybe I'm a bit slow but your note has helped a lot, I've found info to date a bit confusing.
I'm going to look at this soon as I'll have my engine out shortly.

Got me thinking now, maybe it's easier to move the TA22 xmember LCA points or modify the KE70 outers to fit into a TA22. Wonder if this has been done or if to your point it's best to keep it all the same from the KE70 and effectively make the cross member fit my TA22.

The angle of the steering column to the rack seems to be quite sharp, have you found any issues with this?

    Cheers,
    Simon

Are you telling me that KE7x LCA's *are* longer than TA22 LCA's? (Here's to hoping) But http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/tec...-database.html says they're the same length :/
I've been hunting everywhere for XT130 LCA's but can't find any anywhere

No ta22 LCA's are the same length as ke70 from what I have seen... They are approx 300mm from pivot to ball joint.

I'm sure the KE30 arms were 310mm as well so could be worth investigating.

If they are different it's only minor. I have both LCA's on my workbench and they look the same length.
