I have had a bit of a look but can't find an answer to this question.

I am using a standard length Koni insert, so won't be shortening my struts.

Does any one know where I should be welding my coil over sleeve on to the strut housing? Flush with the top of the strut tube, or should I be a bit further down the tube?

I can't get my head around how I work this one out - unless I try and dummy it all up in the car some how to see how much the spring compresses with the car weight on it?

I have shortened mine by 60mm or so , so mine isn't going to be exactly the same.. But I have my sleeves around 7cm from the top of the tube.
Be careful welding the sleeve around the threaded section for the gland nut as the strut tube is thinner here and the weld tends to penetrate into the thread.

Nah the threaded section is around 70mm from the top, maybe 50mm.. It starts below the end of the threaded section of the strut..

I find it to sit nicely.. there are some pics in my thread.. but with the setup i have i get a good bound/rebound ratio.the coilover spring platform sits around the middle of the threaded section, so plenty of adjustment up or down..

i am using sw20 rear inserts in the front of mine.. around 60mm chopped out of the tube with a 10 - 15mm spacer..

Sounds like a long long way down on a shortened strut. But thats purely gut feel talking.

My inserts are a Koni - Part number 86-1991 Sport. More a road oriented shock that is standard length apparently, but mine have been revalved to suit my club racing application.

I probably wouldn't only as I want to retain some suspension travel. which was my reason for cutting so much out of the tube.. I found with the strut the standard length it was all compression, no droop.. not ideal..

I am using KYB AGX which were around $400 for the pair..

    Hi,
cheers for that, seems to be the popular choice. Gotta start looking into the rear coilover idea soon too........

One of the benefits of shortening the strut tube, is you can cut the old spring platform off and toff it. Weld your tube together and then weld the threaded section over the joint, nice and strong.

Thanks for clarifying that Joel, looking at your pic that threaded sleeve looks a lot shorter than the ones I have used, if I ran mine 70mm down they'd foul on the brake line mount given their length and I guess to some extent the length of my struts.

As long as the thread is in the right spot so people have a useable range like yours clearly illustrates then it's right.
