Just a guess but if heat causes glazing then maybe the increased friction from the parts actually able to move more freely is causing the glazing?Originally Posted by JZA70 R
Because if the poorer quality oil is thicker then I guess the syncro's aren't grinding as well and then less heat is produced and then no glazing?
lol just a guess I've got no idea![]()

Thought I'd dig this back up, I'm in the process of rebuilding my gearbox as the front input bearing is buggered and i figured I'd replace everything while it's apart (bearings and synchros). As I was running lightweight shockproof I've checked for glazing and found the contact surface on the synchro itself is still in reasonable condition, however the adjacent mating surface is definitely glazed and although it didn't effect the superb shifting quality it's undesirable. So before the new synchros go in I'll run some lapping compound between them. Next time I'm going to run MTL.
I'll put the salvaged shockproof in my torsen![]()
Wasn't it decided that Redline MTL was just a regular gearbox oil like any other brand, with nothing special about it?
I'm not running an R154, but all the gearboxes i've used i have run Gulf Western Ultraclear 75W90 synthetic gear oil in.
These include - T50, W50, W58, E58(lsd), C50, C52, C56.
All gearboxes were noticably easier to use after changing over to the Gulf Western oil.... i used to use Castrol VMX80, but the GW stuff gives a nicer shift feel and seemed to quieten my old noisy T50 and W50.
...... butt scratcher?!
ill be picking my r154 up from the rebuilders tomorrow, with new bearings and syncros
being a fresh rebuild would you go redline lightweight or castrol vmx80?
maybe we need a vote for which oil you sware by

Im using Penrite Limslip 85W-140 in both my diff and gearbox, and love it.
Probably also love it because i buy 5bottles of it for $100, and then change it after every race meeting. Single bottle normally does a gearbox (T50) and diff (T-series).
Was running VMX80 before that.
Have put Limslip 90 into my W58 for the Cressy, will see how it goes.

I've put vmx80 into my rebuilt box.. but the car isn't running yet so i can't give you a verdict on the performance. (so a pretty pointless post really) I was running lightweight shockproof and my synchro cones were looking polished.. Mind you it had no problem shifting. If you want to use a redline oil, none of the shockproof range will be suitable (or oil's for that matter) So you'd want to use the MTL.
VMX80 has proved itself to me in the past in other gearboxes and i believe my mate (Doobs) is running it in his r154 curently.
I'm currently running VMX80 and it made a noticable improvement with shifting to 2nd.

kemicalx,
You mentioned earlier about the synchros looking good but the " adjacent mating surface looking glazed " i would pressume you are talking about the cone surface area on the gears that the synchros work on ? .. if that is what you are talking about they are meant to have a polished glaze look about them for them to work because you dont want the synchro ring actually locking on to them solid ..
Because when you are changing gears the synchro initially drags on the gear as you shift gears to alter the gear speed, but once the same speed is achieved in the gear, the synchro has done its job and so it is allowed to move ( hence the glazed look ) & align everything up so the sliding sleeve can slip over the synchro outer teeth & align with dog teeth on the gear itself ...
Basically what i am getting to is the fact if you lapped in the mating surface that you earlier talked about you may have actually created some issues ??.. Hopefully not for your sake, but also to stop other people from maybe lapping in synchros, with the aim of taking the " glazed look " off from the cone / synchro area of the gears ....

Cheers mate, i don't want to sound like a knob, but yer i know how they workThe cones were polished beyond a typical finish.. and it was effecting the synchro's braking ability when tested manually.
I vote vmx80 still.Originally Posted by forey

I said it a couple pages back, doesn't really matter which Oil you use as long as its the right type. Generally you want a GL-4 specific Oil unless the vehicle manufacturer states otherwise.... and has been mentioned, Redline MTL (GL-4) is liquid gold if you can afford it otherwise Penrite SIN Manual Trans Oil is a quality semi-synthetic GL-4 oil at about $25 for 2.5L. Castrol Syntrans is over-rated for what it costs especially when Redline MTL is only about $5 per litre more.
You will definitely see shifting issues if you use a GL-5 or GL-6 Oil in a GL-4 specific Gearbox... so don't try to outsmart the manufacturer thinking you know better.
Redline also state their Shockproof range is not suitable for Gearboxes with synchro engagements...... only thing I use it in is differentials.
Rep points are for those who feel inadequate in other areas !
Just to stir things up a little bit more, its now 4 years since ive been running the lightweight shockproof, shifting quality has never been better. In the last 12 months ive done about 20 passes at the drags, about 50 or more on this gearbox. Same stuff is in the torsen which has outlasted about 2 or 3 of my mates torsens.
My car is no princess, i hurt the thing constantly, both the gearbox and diff are unopened, the gearbox has all your typical noises of a 18 year old gb and the diff has about 45' of slop in it but they are both happy as larry.
i love my redline lightweight shockproof gear oil!![]()
