i assume you are refering to the acrylic primer?

so if i put on a thin coat of acrylic primer, sand it back, then throw on the 2k top coat it should be ok?

primer is Concept Paints Acrylic Primer Filler (grey), top coat is De Beer Beromix 2000 series 2k solid colour.

Yep, meant the acrylic.

That will work fine. You would probably want 2 coats of the primer with a guide coat (primer coat, guide coat, sand, primer coat, guide coat, sand) for a better finish.

Hi All,

so i'm nearly ready to start painting the roof of my FJ40 landcruiser. I really want to paint in 2pak at home using iso free. Does anybody have any experience with it? Is it safe or do i still need a booth? If it is shit, does anyone have experience in enamel at home? I really don't want to use acrylic as i want the paint to actually last

I have used isocyanate free clear and it works ok, but does not flow like iso based clear. In my experience, it required a higher pressure to spray a suitably smooth and glossy coat.

A lot safer, but you would still need a mask as the thinners aren't that good for you anyway.

Hi all

I'l be painting our uni FSAE car tomorrow night and need some advice.

The colour scheme is metallic grey/silver/blue, alternating diagonal stripes.

The paint type is Acrylic, what I'm after is how long do I need to leave the paint before I can mask over it to form the next stripes? Is there a preferred tape people use to form sharp edges?

I've just been told today that I'l be doing it lol. We're on a tight deadline and I want it done in 8 hours if possible.

I have a fair but of exp painting, never this acrylic though

Use the blue plastic lining tape available from most auto paint stores.

Your paint data sheet also available from the paint supplier will give flash off times, tape free times and cure times, anything else is just guessing.

Remember air temperature, humidity, and panel temp will all have an effect on the cure times. The data sheet is a guide using ideal temp and humidity.

so it's been a long time since i put down the primer like maybe a year? has been inside garage all that time, so no rust is poking through...
Do I need to rub it fully back to metal again?
or just hit it with maybe 400 and key it up, then spray very thin primer coat to soften it up and go from there?
or key up then spray another primer coat as normal?

Just knock it back with 800, then apply your colour of choice.

If you have not done a gude coat rub back, then this is the time to do it, a mist spray of chassis black or even a mist spray of matt black from a rattle can will do, ensure it is acrylic though. Spot repair as necessary, spot prime and then give it the last coat of primer then shoot some colour

has been guide coated, but have some spot repairs to do on rear 1/4, so was planning to do a couple coats there, then 1 more primer over whole car, then rub back 800 and colour.

i have my mx73 in primer at the moment, just going through rubbing back the guide coat and finding more dints.... anyhow im looking at doing a 2 tone, anyone got any tips for what tape to use or how do do it so i can avoid having a bump were the 2 colors come together, or should i just get a pinstripe over the join? haha

Lay down your main base colour, then use the blue plastic lineing tape, made for ultra clean straight edges. Back that up with regular masking tape and your choice of paper. Lay your second colour to that new blue line. Remove the mask and clearcoat over both colours, No steps left that way.

The trick to all this is you have to lay the blue tape down when the new paint is just tack free, then you have to remove it all before the second colour dries. dry paint chips and flakes. wet paint can get messy, but take your time removing the mask and all will be fine. have a razor blade on standby to cut the paint if you start to tear the paint.

Yeah if you sorta mess it up lay down a pin stripe over the joint

awesome, thanks for the tips, when i get around to buying paint i should be able to get hold of some tape too i hope, but at this stage it will be a while cause the more i sand the guide coat off the more hi-low spots i find....... starting to regret buy it now hahah

Hi.

part of underbody on a car im working on had either bog or some sort of orange stuff on it, I'm trying to coneal this. I should have sprayed it matt black but instead I got a touch up gloss black brush and went over it with a few coats, now one area of the underbody looks very glossy while other one is just plain. I want to now make the gloss look dull like the rest of the underbody - is there any sort of checmical or agent I can put on it, or should I just spray a thin coat of matt black over the area?

You could give it a light rub with a scotchbrite pad, but you're probably better off giving it a quick cover with matt paint.

Hi All,

Me again.
Brief (5 years i think) hiatus between painting on the corolla.

Note to all: Do not strip paint and leave for 5 years even in a garage. Surface rust sucks.

Anyways....now i need a spray booth. Does anyone have a contact in the sydney area? im tracking for about 4 weeks time and hire for a day.
