Jeri, yep same basic procedure. I have done a couple of sets of mags, one for a BMW Mini, and another set for a BMC Mini. 2 pac all in one for the best gloss. Clean the begeezus out of the rims, de grease, wash with sugar soap. Sand any inperfections out, wash again, prep wash and dry, then prime. Sand primer, then shoot the colour onto the rear of the rims, a coupla three coats, let that dry, then repeat for the front face of the rim. Do it the other way and you will end up with overspray on the front face, not what you want.

    cheers Chuck.

Steel rims, just make sure you remove all the rust. Save yourself some time and dollars, just use a couple of gloss black enamel rattle cans. Bunnings or SupaCrap paint will be fine. Done right the finish will be good for a couple of years,

Bit of advice appreciated on the following...
Purchased a car that had undergone a decent quality paint job (windows/engine out, back to metal, primer and surfacer (blocked back), colour coat with a small flake, clear coat, all paints in 2 pack) Previous owner then decided to add some stripes in black: light scuff of the clear coat (scouring pad), then applied black 2 pack stripes and then another clear coat over.

Question is: can the stripes be buffed off (and if necessary a coat of clear applied afterwards)? My logic is that if I am careful with the buffer and some fine cutting compound (or should I be thinking very fine wet n dry like 2000 wet?) it should be ok.

Which ever way you go, if there is one blow through to the underlying colour coat you are screwed and up for at least a total panel repaint.

I would probably mask the good paint, and very very gingerly rub out the black, just back to clear, 2000 will take untill you are ready to retire! 320 too coarse, maybe 800wet.

Best advice is to take it to the paintshop that did the blackouts and have them remove the black. The shop shoulp have a very high tech dry orbital sander/wizzer which I think is the only way to remove that black coat.

    cheers Chuck.

    Thanks Chuck...
I have a decent buffer (Makita variable speed) as well as a decent random orbital wet sander..I'll give it a go on the bonnet...if it fails I'll paint it black! Paintshop not really an option....

Has anyone every experienced issues with fly's shitting on your paint? Apparently they are attracted to blue and it appears that after wet rubbing my clear coat for flow coating and leaving it a few months in the shed i have hundreds of tiny specs of fly shit on my blue paint. Wax and grease remover does SFA and im sure as hell not scratching off thousands of specs with my fingers nails. Does anyone know of a product suitable for easily disolving fly poo and not harming paint?

jeffro, use Eucalyptus oil on cotton wool, best tar and bug remover you will ever find. You will have to prepwash the car after, but you were going to do that anyway,

    Hi guys,

I realise this is a spray painting thread, though I figured I'd ask here since welding and spray painting go hand-in-hand when it comes to body repairs..

I wanted some advice on purchasing a gas/gas-less MIG welder. I'm wanted to spend under 500 big-ones. I few that I've found include:

    Welder 1

    Welder 2

Particularly the first one as you can run it at 25amps which would be better for the thin sheet metal right?

Any help is really appreciated, as well as hot tips

Simple answer, buy the best you can afford, with the maximum adjustability. A 120amp MIG will do panels, but not structural such as engine mounts. A 180amp- 200amp will do both, just gotta dial it in to reduce the heat and panel warpage.

Gasless is a complete waste of time, due to huge spatter problems from the flux cored wire.

The first one looks OK, but I am a bit sceptical of the Asian built welders. Have a look at a tool shop in your area, you will be surprised at what you can get for the price.

Gotta be fan cooled, otherwise you will be stopping and starting all the time.

Has to be totally variable wire speed, not the 1-2-3-4-5-6 step ones, these are very hard to dial in for panel work.

    cheers Chuck.

another panel beating question - I have to repair/replace the rust in the boot of my MZ11 - lots of it require repair sections to be shaped and welded in. So what metal should I be asking for at the local metal supply place?

(Noting that I'm now living in a rural area so the folks at the various supply places talk a bit slow and deal better with short words)

    I have a painting question.

My car (MR2) was resprayed in 2pac in a slightly darker than stock red, not a very good respray, but not terrible. I want to put the stock spoiler back on which is in good condition but the colour is the stock red. Is it possible to get an acrylic (since 2pac is neigh on impossible for a home job?) which will be the same as the 2pac in colour? Or even after some polish/wax will i be able to make them basically indistinguishable from each other? 1 Shop i rang for matching said its impossible, the other said it just depends on the tinters they have available, and about $100 roughly for 1ltr (was thinking of doing the boot lid while im at it because its got a dint in it).
