Default Dry ice, sound deadning removal

Hi all quick question, I'm looking to remove the sound deadning from my ae86 race car, but I'm having trouble getting my hands on dry ice. My local boc recon they don't deal in it. Anyone have any sugestions where to get it on the northern beaches?

    hi craig
with the club car ,we found that by leaving it out side on a cold night can have close to the same results
then with a variety of chisels including a brick bolster and an air chisel ,and a rubber mallet to crack it , it came away fairly easy
we saved 14 kg of deaden er

Not all BOC branches carry it, closest one would be alexandria near the airport that im aware of.

    Hi,

Personally I think the dry-ice idea is not really that good. I tried dry ice for one section and then used a heat gun for another section.

I found that the heat gun was easier and you had less chance of marking the underlying metal (if that is a concern) - then a quick wipe up of the slight remaining material with wax and grease remover and you are done.

works out to be cheaper and easier to get your hands on a heat gun as well - which you will probably use for other things anyway!

I got my dry ice from here - http://www.airliquide.com.au/

Yeah, Ian is right, the cold overnight temps makes it as good as and less messy. Hit it with a mallet and use a 30mm chisel with the corners rounded of makes it easy. Then once all the chips are out, hit it with w wire wheel on a drill to clean up the residue.

Sweet so many sugestions! Haha, I can't realy leave the car outside as I live in a unit and I'm not sure if would still be there in the morning! I will definatley try the pathology option, otherwise I guess it's a drive to the airport or out with the heat gun, we used the heat on a mates e30 and it wasn't much fun, hence wanting to try the dry ice approach.

    Cheers everyone.
Ps, rep all round but I accidentaly clicked neg for you cuzzo, ill find another post and make it up.....

that may be the way it works in Melbourne, but your nights are a good 5-8 degrees cooler than ours unless you are talking way out western suburbs of Sydney.

i vote dry-ice. I applied it in sections and ensure the ice was covered with newspaper & cloth to minimise evap losses and keep temps down to a minimum. After 10-15 minutes, shift ice to new section, a fews belts to the now-frozen section with a hammer/mallet, clean up with dustpan+brush, have smoke+coffee and read a few pages of the paper. Repeat.

No noise, no scratching, no odour - plus i got to blow up a few 2l coke bottles afterwards.

    I used liquid Nitrogen,

Worked a treat, i think it was about 6 liters did a ae92 hatch completely and it probs only took half an hour.

    Pro's:

BOC and most other stores have it,
Doesn't cost to much when you weight up how long it takes compared to CO2
About twice as cold as dry ice

    Con's:

Will Freeze limbs (like solid frozen digits are cool anyways), must be very careful.
Have to hire an urn to transport it safely.
harder to apply in a sense, i had a stainless steel bucket that i would just tip about 500ml in at a time and tip that in over the sound deadener.

*protip: probably dont transport the urn with it in your front seat with a seat belt over it (i probably didn't think it through, much)
