nick as i said in the aw11 thread im currently using aftermarket st185 joints on the two. im not sure of the diameter on the outer thread but it is significant.. infact it i bigger then the stock 04.89 one that was previously there. my guess would be around the 25mm mark but ill measure it up for you.

    Thanks TooF,
Can you also let me know the brand/part number/source of those st185 joints?
    Cheers, Nick.

wish i could give you part numbers but i dont have them. i simply took the shafts to my local cv man and got them to put new joints on them,.

he looked at the shafts and said they couldnt be from a 4cyl.. heheh

after looking in his book and there was nothing listed for the SC (suprise suprise) i suggested looking for sw20 turbo..nothing. then suggested perhaps st185 (only as i had heard that they interchanged) he had a listing for them and they fitted and worked a treat. these are standard aw11sc 04.89 shafts that are stuck into an e51 box. i dont know if the joint is different to that which is required for an e58. but to give you an idea. my mate with a ae92 gtz 4agze also needed new joints took them to the same place suggesting the st185 units and they didnt fit.. however they were able to count up the splines and shaft OD and sourced suitable joints.

the workshop that sourced these was Dbd mechanical in cardiff. They are in newcastle, NSW. that said im sure if you took the shaft with joints still stuck on it to your local cv man he should be able to sort it out. as an idea mine cost me $140 per shaft.

Hey nick, i had to go thru this very battle took me all day to finally get the first CV off, once i worked out the technique the other CV joint was done in 10 mins.

My trick is to move the cv joint to it's maximum range then give a sharp hit to the other side of the joint and they come right off, hard to explain i'll draw a pic if you want.

Actually i remembered how i did it in now, i kept the pressure down on the end spline held down to it's maximum rotation/range while tapping the back of the CV and it came straight off easy peezy, i tested this trick on heaps of cv's since, (sv21 camry and st162 celica)

Hey Nick, was there nothing in the BGB about pulling the outer CV off? Might be different though...

Thanks for the info Urantia. I might still try this on my now spare troublesome CV that I think I may have stuffed from too many hits!

Mullet : Nope nothing in the BGB about removing the outboard CV..what a rip!! Took my shaft down to CV's Australia today and for $88 they got a reconditioned CV put it on (on my AW11 hybrid drive shaft), and repacked in and outboard CVs with grease! Sweet! They have a special rig for getting the outboard CV's off!!

Sometimes it pays to leave it to the experts.

    Cheers, Nick

hey thanx mick, could use some rep too

I was going to add if the circlip is all buggered /jamed from constant belting, you just have to wack the cv back in to the shaft so the circlip is unjammed, and try a different andle on the CV to get it over that lip. Seems to work every time.

(can get most CV's new on ebay for about $39 including new boot, grease and a circlip!)

which makes paying $80 for a new joint and installation seem like a bargain.. if for nothing esle than you dont have to deal with cv grease everywhere.
