Help needed :: How to separate an outboard CV from driveshaft?

Hi,
I am trying to take the outboard CV (from a supercharger AE92) driveshaft and put it on my MR2 driveshaft. What is the technique for getting the CV off the shaft? Is a press required, and if so how do you hold the shaft?

Also I have another CV (inboard) joint that the 'balls' have fallen out of, how the f*##k do you put it back together?

My poor 'programmer's hands' (As I do of bit of code writing among other things) as EarlyRolla likes to call them are rather covered in black grease right now, but I've made no progress!

on the outer end there is a circlip that holds the cv joint on the shaft. its on the end of teh shaft where the splines are. you will get dirty getting that sucka of.....sorry! hehe

to put the balls back in you have to fit them into the carrier by moving it up and down and round till you get one in, then repeat to get the others in. its a bit difficult but it can be done.

I understand your suggestion for getting the balls in the carrier, but not about getting the outboard CV off the shaft.



How do you get to the outer clip, its inside the metal 'CV casing' Here is a pic please explain. I have removed the inner clip as you can see.

i see what you mean. you may have to twist the casing so that it comes off the ball carrier and leaves the carrier on the splines by itself. im pretty sure that there is a circlip on teh other side that hold the carrier on.

i think that some of the balls may fall out when you do this also, use the same technique to refit them. i have taken cvs apart before and never had to use a press to get one off, they have always had a circlip...

Hmm,

I think my shaft is like this and has an end circlip, and therefor will require force. I have tried a rubber mallet. I found a website that showed using a mallet to hit the cv casing to get that circlip to compress, but this didn't work and I am worried about damaging the CV, if it isn't already I am wondering if there is a special service tool for this job.

remove circlip, belt with wooden mallet. or take a piece of wood and belt with hammer. it will come off it just needs some persuasion,


and in terms of getting the balls bakc in the cage slide is spot on bar the part that suggests sitting down and having a beer first, with a spare ready for when you finish as you'll need it

What do you mean remove circlip? Are you referring to the one inside the CV you cant get to? After 5 mins of mucking around trying to get the ball back in the other CV, I dont think two beers will be enough .

oops sorry just had a look at your pic,

im not sure if ther is a circlip on the outer joint ? ive only had to rip apart the inner joints.

Hi,
I am fairly certain a c-clip holds the CV on the end of the shaft.
I have belted the crap out of the joint with heavy rubber mallet. I dont know if I've hurt it (seems ok of course) but its not enough force. I tried putting the shaft in a vice and using leverage from a steel bar to pop the CV off the end, but its still wont budge! What now?

you can knock your c.v. off with your vice like a slide hammer. Hang onto the axle shaft and slide it through your vice with quick blows so that the jaws of the vice hits on the inner section of the c.v. this should pop your c.v. right off...

Or alternative is to hold axle in vice and hit the inner part of the c.v. with a hammer.You are probably not getting a sharp enough blow with your rubber mallet.Try something a little more solid.

Hmm,
Just broke my wooden hammer the slide hammer approach is no go, and my vice is starting to rip up the top layer of my bench from all the rough treatment. Does anyone know if there is a special tool or some hydraulic press attachment to pop the CV off? I think I am either going to have to make some enquires along this line or buy a new CV, since I have a second shaft..this is just as annoying as nuts that wont undo without stripping etc....f$%#kn cars....can't live with em, can't live without em!!

on the second shaft is there a cut out on teh end of the shaft that looks like it should have a circlip installed in it?

i cant believe it so hard to get off. ive never had one that hard.

I have spoken to a mechanic who says sometimes the circlip can get a little damaged and basically make it impossible to get the CV off without huge force. So if I cant get the CV off it means both the CV and the shaft are useless damn it!

Put the shaft in a vice , slide the boot back , get a copper hammer and hit the joint till it comes off . Dont play with it , you have to realy hit them sometimes.

To finish this thread off, I just spoke to a CV shop. They said if it (the CV) didn't come off on the first hit with a hammer, then its not going to come off, and what they do is use a metal cutting saw to chop the CV off and put a new one on. Thanks for everyones help / suggestions. Now I have to find out the part number of an AE92 Supercharged Outboard CV with the 22mm hub nut thread.
