Default i smell bad after i drive my car

    Gday guys,
    i have a KE70 with bigport 4AGE running a microtech D5 fuel management.
the car has a big exhaust with pod filter.

it has only been street tuned by the previous owner who was a mechanic.
the car runs awesomly, only blows a bit of black smoke when throttle is wide open.

    problem is:

everytime i drive it, i smell like petrol afterwards...like really badly. my cloths smell so bad.
when i drive with the windows shut it doesnt seem so bad.

i would think that my car is running rich except that...
sometimes when i try to start my car it has lots of trouble. then, if i take off the pod filter and cover the intake with my hand and try to start the car, it will start perfectly.

would this mean that my car is running very rich or lean, and would some tuning fix this...
im not really game enough at the moment to touch the microtech in case i make thinks worse

    You have two discreet problems:

The smell you are getting inside the cabin that is marinating your clothes is due to a leak allowing fumes into the cabin. It could be your boot seal or a hole in the floor pan near the rear of the car. You may also have an exhaust leak anywhere from the manifold to the rear contributing to this problem. Opening the windows whilst driving makes any leak in the boot seal or floor pan worse.

The tuning problem I won't comment on, best to get someone confident with the older microtechs to sort out your tune and start up rather than fiddling around with it if you are not confident.

a wideband 02 sensor will definitely tell u if you're running rich or not.. (from looks of things u could have a fubbared O2 sensor) as for tuning, YLD-16L is right on the money... get a pro to do it for you..

i suggest you don't light up a cigarette in your car while driving...

my mrs has the same ecu running her 4age in her ta22, my regular tuner didnt wanna touch it when it was having cold start issues so i sorted it myself.

in regards to your starting issue, if you cover the intake and it starts it means it needs more fuel at start as being injected it doesnt have a manual choke. there is a dial on the ecu for cranking enrichment, dial some more of this in and it may help you on cold starts.
or alternatively you could wire in the cold start injector. im just gonna assume that your cold start injector isnt connected as my girlfriends one wasnt, maybe the ecu cant control it i dunno.
but you can run power to the cold start injector from the starter motor, so when you crank it it powers the injector giving you more fuel. idealy you would want to run this on a timer so it runs for 10 seconds.
but try adjusting the cranking mixture first, worked for me.

thanks for all your help guys,
i will have to get under the car and check it out for any holes tonight.

as for the "cranking enrichment" it has beem set to the richest possible setting...so maybe wireing in a cold start injector is a good idea

il let you know how things go

    cheers, Daniel

have you got a surgetank in the boot?
that will make you smell like fuel as the hoses breathe.

if it blows black at the top end its running rich and losing a fair amount of power/wasting fuel.
    get it tuned asap

Some sound advice there. I will wager that its an exhaust leak, and i have also encountered this problem in my mates sprinter and right next to my gearbox floor hole in my ta22. The smell was so bad that i always felt slightky light headed and wondered if it was causing minor brain damage.

Makes me think of that simpsons episode where Skinner and Krabapal are talking about the low test scores from students then panning to nelson and gang sitting in back of bus, engulfed in smoke

start by taking that computer and throwing it over the nearest hedge
most tuners wont touch them anymore
factory ae82 loom would be more reliable with no head aches

Given he has a Microtech D5 I highly doubt there is an O2 sensor working at all.
