kingmick that moisture in the oil i haddnt thought of, we dont want water in the oil. I might just get into the habit of checking it more regularly and get some sort of level indicator

You get some moisture in your oil anyway. Just a lot less when you dont top it up with lil bits of vapourised, recondensed, contaminated oil, so it lasts longer. Water is a by product of combustion... Remember oil in the head is constantly swished about in a steamy blowby environment. Using the can to ensure that more/all of the crap is condensed into your oil, will just shorten its life.

The size of the can is a very important factor. Oil condenses quicker than water. Different sized cans will condense everything or nothing at all..

I agree that can outlet plumbed back to the intake it lowers the oxygen level of the charge, so on a race vehicle maybe dont do it, rules permitting... But the relative volume of blowby to intake... 2 fifths of fark all.

Just as a guide, Motorsport NZ rules are 1L can for less than 2000cc, 2L can for over 2000cc. This only applies to non plumb back systems to prevent overflowing and oil spillage on the track.

hmm screw EPA, i will be venting the can and not plumbing back the oil. in terms of engine life/performance it seems the best way to go.
although i might run a outlet to the intake (depending on if the cops pick up on it) ive seen a car with a filter on the crank case pass RWCs even if i ran a line to under the manifold and put the filter there just to hide it,

as for putting steel wool or similar in the can, whats the best stuff to get? stainless pot scrubbers? not the wool as the wool rusts and i could end up with small bigs back in the engine? would some sort of baffle help the fumes settle instead of venting straight out and leaving oil all over my engine bay

There used to be a good article on Autospeed with how to construct one, but can't find it anymore. Will have another look around.

How are you gonna get bits back in the engine if nothing goes back to the engine?

I have run PCV on a 1.5L motor with nothing but a filter on the end of the the the pipe, and the only thing that got oily was the filter... A can with a small filter on the outlet should not leave your bay greasy...

    First article
    Second article
here are 2 articles, i think i like the second one better although with steel wool instead of a foam middle section

i think the benefits of using a catch can not hooked up to the intake have been covered pretty well here, but...

i know i dont want this stuff to go back in the engine

Hi, i have a catch can here im going to use on my 302 in the ma61. It has a breather filter at the top of the can...which would dissipate all those yukkie fumes...

I bought it off *ratsport* on ebay and am very happy with it...

There's an article on Positive Crankcase Ventilation in Zoom magazine issue 102. In the article's intro they mention a Silvia catching on fire on its first dyno run whilst using a plastic drink bottle as a catch can. Might want to rethink using a drink bottle

oh noes, ZOOM said its bad?

I read that article, bottle stays where it is, has shown no signs of heat distortion after months of driving and two drift days. if i could get a cheap metal can that doesnt have chrome on it, i would.

    thanks for your concern though!

I use a catch-can that has 2 lines feeding in, one from the rocker cover and the other from the sump (above the oil line). the oil is filtered through the use of a baffle, and the oil collected is returned to the sump. Hence the sump has 2 holes that normally aren't there! The remaining filtered air is returned to the TB! hope it helps.
