Rep system is not the best system around. But a good system with many flaws. it will be interesting to have some kind of stastics of the rep system, and analyse the data, I am sure there will be interesting results.

In some point in future when Internet-peer-groups will be studied in acadamia, it will reflect the organization of human behaviour, and one might find the 'Mate rep Mate' theory might hold true in small group of clusters.

Once I am done with my studies I will try to analyse this, in more detail and I am hopefull toymods site will provide me with enough data...

    Hi,

Your -ve rep is half of your +ve rep (rounded up, I think). So, if you have the ability to give +1 rep, you can also give -1rep. If you can give +8rep, you can give -4rep. If it's rounded up, as I suspect, then if you can give +9rep, you can give -5 (cos 4.5 is rounded up to 5) rep.

The Admin has a rep of only 13 'cos he doesn't say anything much the deserves reputation. His roll is to administer the forums and as such he doesn't contribute to the technical forums nor does he offer anything witty or charming in the other forums - ergo no rep given to Admin.

    errr.... no offence intended Admin

What I'd like to know is just how many people actually rep other people? From what I am able to tell personally is that there is a small cluster that does use the system very well and a whole heap that don't use it at all. There-in lies the problem and skew to the system. If everyone used it properly there would be far less issues, but the system is still relatively new with only 3 months or so since the old forums were shut down and a majority of people moved over.
Even though this forum has been going for ~9 months now it was not used strongly in the 1st 3 months of it's new life.

    Hi,

I can't answer for anyone except myself in regards to how I use the rep system.

I very, very rarely -ve rep. I prefer to PM the person and get anything sorted that way. SO far I have only -ve rep 2 or 3 people. I -ve rep on constant blatent rule breaking - things such as bullshit posts in the technical section, adds in sigs and stuff like that.

I never -rep in the non-car discussion forums as this area is basically a free area where a vast majority of the posts is non-technical and therefore consists mostly of peoples feelings, thoughts and ideas. I don't think it's right to -ve rep someone 'cos they have a different opinion to me.

I +ve rep mostly good tech information - be it for car issues, PC issues or whatever. If someone offers good advice, then I +rep them for it.

Sometimes I even +rep for a witty response that makes me laugh. However, I have noticed some people have gained a lot of rep via this method. While this is fine and within the rules of the rep system, it doesn't necessarily correlate that person to being a font of technical information.

So, when looking at one's reputation you need to understand that their rep could of been earned by hard technical yakka and offering good advice, or by witty & amusing posts.

In the early days of the new Toymods the rep system was used. Well, I used it and I know quite a few others did too. However back in those days we all had low reps and could only gain our reputation by +1 per time. Now, with some of us being able to deal 8, 9, 10 and more rep-pointsper time, you find some peoples reputation going up quickly - more quickly that we were able to when the forums started.

When I rep someone, either +ve or -ve, I always tag my name "river" on the end so you can see who it came from. If everyone did this then there would be no-one getting blind reps without knowing who it was. Oh, and I always put in the reason why I gave the rep. If you're going to give/take rep it's nice to let the receiving party know why. If we all gave a bit of feedback then we can learn.

to clarify, -ve rep is the lower half of your pos rep...

so now i have +13, but -6... and it won't be -7 until i get +14..... not that it matters anyway

initially i was also PM'ing people about instances where i would neg rep, but more often than not, it had no effect, and people just either ignore what i asked, or told me to go jump... so now i often just neg rep.

this results in more response PM's from people along the lines of "what did you do that for"

funnily enough, often these people are the same that told me to go jump before

anyway, it's only rep... for club members, it doesn't matter.. and the bar is set so low that anyone can get enough rep to sell their crap very quickly.....

too much fuss.. not enough positive technical input

and recently, too much degrading of the non-car discussion area... some people have nothing better to do than post crap... why can't they do it elsewhere?

well its just alot harder to rep if your someone (like me) who doesnt really know a great deal about cars and can't really put much info in the tech section. i'm learning but its not like i could give a write up of the thermal dynamics of expansion in tubine's fitted with a mr fusion

thought a good detailed write (even on something pretty basic) seems to get you a fair bit of +rep aswell. or a good photo chop with the orly owl seems to go down well.
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are

Basically encouraging people to post inapropriate material can have a down side Probably a tough lesson to learn but you were not the only one and we do modderate all area's of the forums, Including the rep system.
    righttt...

i can't remember exactly what happened but i thought that rep was given "discretely" and while the dude probably deserved the neg rep, i thought it was alright so i repped him for effort and sharing, never thought was encouraging, but that's his business eh?. Anyway there's lot of weird, pointless and repetitive threads in the non-car discussion, which should be deleted more than anything.

now i'm just giving a suggestion, so that thread-space isn't wasted, if all the "crap" could be put in one thread, and that the thread is limited to let's say, 5 pages? where we'll put up all the non-car related links which are funny, but also for a cheap laugh.. and uses cannot be repped on, but bad posts can be deleted and such?? well it's just a suggestion to keep it in one thread, the other alternative is to delete irrelevant stuff as whenever it is seen so it doesn't take up web space? i mean the non-car related thread is very general and there is a very fine line between outhouse talk and "non-car related" discussions, and then there's a thing called "perception" where one might think it's alright, but might not agree with moderators?

well anyway at least i've got an answer.. thanks for your time and cheers~

but.. why encourage crap at all?
there are plenty of other forums where you can look at crap... crap is just a google search away

    as for the fine line...
porn, rascism, violence etc are not acceptable....
i suppose what it comes down to is discouraging people from using toymods as their internet toilet because they are bored...
toymods = technical forum = > other forums
    lets keep it that way

    what he said ^^^^

Theres plenty of sites dedicated to crap, ytmnd and somethingaweful spring to mind. ytmnd is just plain scarey, its what forums would be if they were run by 8 year olds

It would be so sad to see toymods decend to those lows...

"admin" is an administrator account. It was the first account created and was used to set up the forums. Its function is administration issues (encompassing content management, amongst many) but not supply of content itself, hence low rep.

"admin" is also a moderator, as are the other (four) administrators.

think of it like the "administrator" account on your PC.... to change some system things, you have to be logged in as admin... on both the PC and the forums....

but... why does it matter *P
