any system used to gage credibility ,is open to abuse ,and abused it is.i read the posters profile before passing comment to see if they are new or young or both ,and give them some slack ,it seems some folks trall through the forums ,slapping those who in their opinion are to quote the Nazis "untermench" sub human. not a fair minded way to go.i have made many friends in my time on the forum short as it is and try to give good advice ,support or just be humorous. i know the system was introduced to control the for sale threads ,but maybe a provisional forum membership with limited access for a time period could have worked better..i am myself annoyed by those who treat the thread they most use as their private property, and either ignore, bag or - rep you so you in short piss off. ok my 2c worth. Man isn't this thread go all over the shop.

There was a question earlier as to how much rep is being used. I can't be bothered with checking exactly who is making all of the rep votes at this time but for refference there have been 2955 rep votes in the last month.

    that's 98.5 +ve reps/day!

I wonder if there is honestly that much useful content posted up everyday...
your rep rating is not a reflection of your worth to the community

One post could get 100 rep votes if 100 people find it useful info.

Even though your signature shows your bias I'd say that your rep value isn't a reflection of what you believe to be your worth to the community but what the community believes your value to be. If the community believes the contribution to be valuable then it will get rep and can get a hell of a lot of rep if enough of the community find it useful. Just because you think your contribution is good and worth rep doesn't necessarily mean it is.

Ah yes, but you have to consider if that is rep points or reps. If its rep points I got 11 at once the other day. I assume it is number of reps (rather than points) but I don't see that as excessive. It just means that 98 people saw something rep worthy, that may have included one bit of info that was useful to 10 people. Depending how often I'm on the forum I could rep nothing or up to 10 times a day, if someone provides useful info especially with background support I will rep it. Even if someone starts a good discussion on a topic, it is worthy of rep if they have done a bit of research first and structured their question clearly.

No that was 2955 rep votes in the last month, not rep points. I don't know how many rep points have actually been given out in the last month but it would be plenty.

Just remember, a single post like peewee's NCOPS post has probably received 50+ rep votes by itself!
then, of course, there are rep votes for info shared via pm. rep is also sometimes given for good trading experiences.. it all adds up rather quickly

I didn't say you couldn't get 100 reps for a thread, it's just whether you could get 98.5 every day.

My signature doesn't show anything about my bias towards the rep system. It simply states that how much rep you sport doesn't indicate how much your contributions actually benefit the community.

I don't agree. It's an indication of what a select group of people (ie those that give rep) think your worth to be.

for sure, that's what the rep system is predicated on

    huh?...

I think we are almost on the same page. Please don't think I'm trying to stir sh!t with my sig, it's just there to get people thinking, which it seems to have done

Indeed!!!!! And your license points is just an integer in a DB2 (possibly) database - same with your license number, age and a million other facts about you.

Just wondering if anyone knows what a grey rectangle next to a reputation comment means, as apposed to a green one.

means that person tried to rep you, but didn't have enough rep points to have an efffect on your score
