Sweet as thanks heaps Witzl and Dnegative

Can't wait to get it started. Should I be doing anything extra regarding priming the motor if it hasn't been started in 5 years or so?

Just wanted to thank everyone here for your help. I gave the battery another charge and checked for the marker on the intake cam through the oil cap.

Guess what..... This whole time I was working off the wrong TDC. I couldn't see the marker on the intake cam so I rotated the crankshaft 180 degrees and realigned. It fired up after about 6-7 seconds of sputtering. The motor sounds very healthy indeed. Now that I know its running ok, I will replace the water pump and timing belt (couldn't do it out of the car as I couldn't undo that crankshaft pulley bolt.

Thank you so much for all your help jondee86, dnegative, The Witzl and BrianGT. You have all made it possible to get my car going!

    Happy new year to everyone

Glad you got it sorted mate!
When the timing marks are on TDC it just means that pistons 1 and 4 are at TDC... BUT they are on different strokes of the cycle.

Looking at the cam lobes tells you which is ready to fire........the lobes are horizontal and there is the gap at the shim bucket also.
As you now know you just had the Dizzy firing on the wrong stroke! I've done it myself hence being able to suggest it! (

Hahaha well your suggestion worked awesome and it was the one thing I didn't check. For some reason I assumed that if its TDC and the crank was rotated another 360 degrees, the cams would be in the same position but of course a rookie mistake haha

I loved when the motor started up, the sound was just music to my ears. This really is going to be such an awesome car once its done

    Thank you again

The pump's seal may have gotten some corrosion while sitting. Running for 10-20 minute without the radiator cap on tight will let the seal cut through the corrosion without coolant being forced into it & stopping its self resurfacing work.
If that weep hole has an old mineral buildup around it, it was probably leaking beforehand & then replacement might be best.
'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!

Oh thanks for the information Allen, A great help indeed.

The only problem I have at the moment is that the water pump backing plate is leaking, I know of 2 orings that go on it (one to the back of the bypass pipe fitting behind the motor, and one that seems to be squashed in that sits against the block). But it appears there is another seal, closest to the Power Steering pump that the water pump backing plate seems to have. I looked up on

I was wondering if anyone knew how to get that gasket/seal that sits in the actual mating surface of the front of the motor, and the backing plate? I think there is 2 orings and possibly a gasket on the backing plate housing.

I have my new water pump and gasket all ready to go on soon once I get the backing plate back on.

I will have the timing belt and water pump done in no time hopefully lol

Not sure, I just did a water pump on mine and there are only 2 orings and the water pump gasket (or FIPG)

Oh mint thanks for your help

I got the timing belt and water pump all done, cars running great. I went to put the stock exhaust back on to get the car driving and noticed this particular noise when firing the motor up.

Is it possible anyone could suggest what it could be? Just a note I have not yet set the base timing properly. So i'm not sure if this could also be an issue

Just an update. I removed both belts for a quick test and its still doing the noise. It appers to be coming from the timing side of the motor. I fit a brand new toyota timing belt and a gates timing belt kit.

maybe it was just some squeaky bearings on some pulleys or the alternator or something.
    Hopefully it stays gone.
