ive advanced mine to about 15 btdc on 91, cant hear any knocking, and even on 20 the only knocking i was getting was when you shut the throttle off and the revs fell, would knock quietly from 1500 to 1000...vac advance is working

it seems torquier but doesnt rev aswell, not that she was ever any good over 5 an a bit.
is quicker by abou 10km on a road that i like to thrash it on (private ofcourse)

you sure that wasn't rod knock or similar?
it should be VERY difficult to produce knock when there is no load and buggerall mixture in the cylinders. IF it did knock under those conditions, then under partial throttle at those same rpm, it would knock like a bastard.... methinks you had other issues

i ended up going back from about 25 to about 20deg advance (with slightly modified advance mech) using 98, big cam with lower dynamic compression and about 7500rpm-8000rpm (and highly modded combustion chambers)
although i could not produce a knock even winding advance right up (like 35deg) it still felt better and made more power with about 20deg base advance. any more and it started to fight itself... you can hear a slight change before you can feel the difference tho.

however... on 91, it would ping (tinkling) even with about 10-15deg advance... i only ever made that mistake once

hmm maybe it was, but it went away when i retarded it again
theres no pinging from what i can hear, but she isnt the quietest car on the street, and i couldnt hear anything with my head under the bonnet so who knows.
im not too worried about this motor as my 1g should be finished in under a month..hoolaayy!!!!
ahem...i might give some 95 a run next time i fill up, but i ended up paying 52 bucks to fill the corolla on 91 octane the other day...WHO PAYS OVER FIFTY BUCKS TO FILL A BLOODY COROLLA?!?!!?!

if it doesnt increase my economy ill wind it back a little, so you sayin that rings and pistons tend to disappear in the later 4k's oldcorollas?

ahem...



knocking KILLS the rings and ringlands... ESPECIALLY for the later 3K and 4K motors with the repco/toyota pistons. they seem to be very fragile, and i've seen a few motors pulled down now.. only blowing a little smoke, with no rings or ringlands intact.

DON'T advance timing until it pings.... unless you want to rebuild.

91 octane is crap and no car should run on it 95-98 ftw. only advance timing as much as creates more power everywhere. any more is costing you fuel as the engines fights itself.

like i said, doesnt hurt them for half a shit

K series engines are blardy bomb proof!

oh.. well.. i drove what? 300km on last weekend... used to do 150km a day to go to skifield and back

i usually go for a random 2 or 3hr drive every weekend, checking out new mountain roads (since most of hokkaido.. and japan.. is mountain ) and other nice places to drive in the countryside...

i spose you would drive further in australia.... 6hrs from sydney to actually be ABLE to see snow (instead of opening kitchen window ) (in perth.. is there anything to drive to? it's so small you should be able to get around on a pushy and there is nothing interesting nearby.. except.. well... nothing.... maybe darwin?)
