ill be honest with ya my timing marks on my cam gears are at the top (both upright)

the backing plate on the cams have marks on them that the cams are ment to line up with
in the case of your cams the dots may be what are ment to line up with the timing marks on the rear cam cover but dont quote me on that

i always thought the white mark on the tooth part of the gear was what you line up with the timing marks
If in doubt, drift her out! Steer from the rear! less traction, more action! simple!

ok but what would the point of the black dots on the gear be? i thought that line was so u can retard/advance the cam

this is true but the factory cams also have a line that runs identical to the white line on the cams

better yet do you have a original set of cam gears ?

they will only go on one way to the cam and the timing mark points straight up..

nah there at the dump. this is a real pain in the ass.

ok so i need to know exactly the order you do things here because i cant seem to get it right , its hard to get the cams to sit exactly right cause of the big lobes the exhaust cam sits a to high at the back for me to put a cap on. i cant seem to get the hks timing belt on the gears as it is tight as all fu$k. any hints

you should be instaling the cams into place prior to any belt install.

take all your caps off and sit the cam/s in the right spot and spin the cam around until it sits as close to level as possible in the head, sit your caps in place and drop in your bolts. they should be done up the same way you would tension the head to the block so not to damage the bearings

with all this in mind is prob best if you have engine @TDC

on a STD cam gear the centre hole has a small cutout for the locating pin that holds it to the cam.
the timing mark is dead inline with the the locating pin

so if the aftermarket cams are built the same then the locating pin on the front of the cam should be at the top and the cam gears should then line up giving you an idea if its the dot on the cam or the actual line on the front of the cam

ill go take some pics for ya

they will move when you first clamp them down but once they are clamped down you should be able to turn them with a socket on the bolt to line them up

just no big movements coz once clamped you will be moving valves also
