glad to see you got it sorted... this being said the fact that you changed plugs and coils etc one would have assumed testing spark was one of the 1st things uve done lol...

If you read my post above you'd see that I did test spark but at the time I found I had the igniter pinned incorrectly (backwards, read the schematic wrong!) and fixing the problem I assumed I had spark.

Not to mention, as I said, the spark plugs were all identical.. so I naturally assumed spark was the same on all cyl..

    Congratulations!

In fact your experience may save even more than 100 bucks. Though still I don't quite believe. When I was swapping 4-speed to 5-speed auto on my 1jz-ge, mate helped me transplanting the loom. 2nd coil connector was broken in new loom, and he just isolated crimped terminals and put them in, didn't say a thing to me. I was busy connecting things inside car at the moment. The mate was unaware of polarity thing and reversed it. I was driving for a year before noticed the lack of connector and polarity reversal, everything was just fine.

    what is J-spec?
2jzgte with vvti has obd2-style connector but it still needs specialized scanner/software.
Though physical layer is k-line, like in your 1993 engine. Free scanner software exists as well.

Interesting story, George. I find it odd that the polarity sometimes matters and not other times. That's very interesting.

When I said Jspec I meant JDM/MAP based, not USDM/MAF/AFM based.

I wonder if there was an auto Aristo with OBD2 or auto JDM Supra with OBDII. Hmm.. apparently it's (mostly) a direct swap, just have to add a few things (secondary o2 and whatnot). I'm still automatic obviously.

I once swapped such an engine off JZS161 Aristo, but it had MAP *and* MAF. And it was tricky to find ECU without immobiliser.

Hmm very odd. Maybe I should just go standalone.

Quick test for ignition coil polarity.

I've never seen a difference, maybe on a dyno at WOT or with a marginal coil there is.

Well I can tell you first hand, that today I had no spark on cyl #4 until I swapped the polarity.. very odd

btw, allencr - very interesting info! I didn't pay attention too much to the fact that this winter I had very poor start with outside temp below -18 C. I only noted it supposingly became worse after I swapped loom. Now it seems like wrong coil polarity could be among other reasons for that.
