It clearly says 4AGE in title.
    Not 7AGE, not 3SGE, not even C20XE, Duratec, M10...

I know, I read it- I am just curious why

I am guessing it's another one those things I don't get because I have different things influence my choices

    - like the 4AGE way it is
    - keeping it in a way that i can do some hillclimbing/racing in FIA 1600ccm E1 class
    - like to succed in things that are not that easy

Slamming in 3SGE sounds easy, at least for me. I wouldn't buy AE86 if i wanted it to be easy. In that case i would buy BMW E30 and put in 2.5 24v or 3.5 12v. Nope, don't like it .

Well if it's to suit a class then that's another story.

What hasn't been mentioned before is there are some reports of the stock pump breaking up at higher revs. How much truth is in it I don't know.

I guess this also comes down to 16 or 20V?

First;the stock head flow enough for about 180 hp and may produce it if everything else is right. Most tuning cams are made for stock heads that quit at 8 mm lift.
Even mild porting needs camlift around 10 mm (being 210 hp territory) and serious engines more than that. Those 220-240 hp engines have cams with 12 mm lift(or more). What kind of running cost of 180 hp 4A-GE? Depends how it's done but what the 170 hp 20v Blacktop needs? Basic maintenance and that's it!
Basically same engine and if it is used as street engine the street engine rules apply. You drive hard;you pay attention to engine..

I can get access to the original camshaft grinds that Toyota used for their race ae86 before and after they where told not to use shim under buckets.
