    Default wolf 3d tuning help

    Hey everyone,

Im unsure if this is something ill be able to tackle alone but ill give it a shot. I've got a wolf3d v3 with hand controller running my 4agze. It did a few hours on the dyno and the place i took it got it to the point where it runs.
There are a few issues I have with the tune though and wondering if anyone with some knowledge in any adjustments i could make, as my knowledge of tuning these is very minimal.
    issues are:

    1. When cold start/first start of the day: motor seems to miss, pop and fart around. It will only do it till the motor gets to around 40-50c then its fine and nothing is wrong

    2. When the OverTemp Fan settings kicks in the motor is obviously quite hot and will usually happen in slow moving built up traffic, and the motor drops a few hundred RPM but then at times when you take off it seems like its flooded and when u take off the motor sounds like its drowned and the rev die right off and will either stall. Then do an FC restart and see lots of fuel smoke out the back, or manage to get the revs up enough to clear out the fuel.

    3. When Its rev'd at any time and you take your foot off the pedal anywhere from 2000-7000 rpm the revs drop down to about 500rpm and then climb back upto 1000rpm at idle speed. Rather than come off power and dip straight to idle speed.
Also if the engine is cold and you do this then it will dip down and then usually die.

Also just out of interest, the people tuning it, only tuned it upto 7000rpm and set the limiter is that correct for a 4AGZE, i realise the extra load from the supercharger and the issue with overspinning it.

Otherwise the car runs great, makes really good power, nice and smooth through the rev's and pulls really hard.
So if anyone could help me here i'd be really greatful!
    Cheers guys

Im guessing the wolf is MAP sensored?

Kinda seems like a tune issue in regards idle, I know of a guy at work who had a wolf in his r32 and had all sorts of idle issues, would stall and carry on, they put it down to the wolf.

Maybe try a different tuner, I know some flat out wont touch wolf's, you really need to find someone who knows how to tune them.

It sounds like the calibration for the Toyota coolant temperature sensor is wrong (they are a non linear curve), or the coolant temperature compensation map is set up badly.

This is a pretty common problem with the 4AGZE's. The large volume between the throttle body and the inlet valves (we're talking litres here) cause some real idle speed control issues. With my Adaptronic I'm trying to use ignition timing to control idle speed (it can be selected in the computer to do that) and it works quite well when the engine has some warmth in it. When the engine is cold, it hunts badly and stalls quite easily. 1 potential help may be to bleed the idles speed control solenoid's air into the engine just after the intercooler. This should give a faster engine response when the computer tries to control idle speed to help catch the engine and prevent it stalling.

There is no point in spinning the 4AGZE any faster than 7k. I rarely spin mine (twin charged) past 6.5k, they just don't make any power up there. Let the torque do the talking.

cold start problem is probably due to not enough enrichment for low temps.

how does the v3 control idle? Is it PWM or just a on/off switch? Not sure if you can fix that idle drop issue unless the idle control runs in closed loop (ie. actively controls idle itself, under extra electical load it will add idle, with ac it will add idle, you can usually set an idle map over temperatures for closed loop control systems and the system will maintain these idle values by opening and closing the valve when needed) etc.

Sorry not familiar with the V3

cheers guys its good to know some of the issues arent tune related just stigma of the gze. is there any settings anyone could run me through or perhaps i could photograph screens of the hand controller and perhaps people can advise me ?

    Thanks

1st thing I'd look at is the calibration of the Wolf for the coolant temperature sensor. Then look at the enrichment vs temperature settings. I can send you the Adaptronic supplied base map for you to look at if you like, you'll just have to download and instal the Adaptronic's software (WARI) to see it.

Sure Duk that would be handy.
I assume you've had a few tuning issues too with yours? What sort of setup have you got on your 4a?

I managed to find the exact manual for the ecu and having a read through. One issue I didn't mention was the fact that the car backfires if left in gear coasting down hill. In the manual there is a setting called "Fuel Cut on Over-run". This point seems to address exactly that. However I'm not professing to be any engine tuning professional and would like advice before I dive in and potentially stuff things up.
Basically I don't want the car to dump fuel while there is no throttle applied. It seems leaving it in gear either to add load to slow down at traffic lights or going down hill the engine drops fuel and gets backfires.

This fuel Cut options reduces the injection time to zero. It kicks in at 1200 rpm or greater. And the throttle position that can be specified.
I assume with that 0 would be the desired number unless you had it setup for a specific purpose.the manual too says if in doubt set to 0.
After checking the car it's set to off. I assume this is part of the issue.

Bit of an update: seems setting the fuel Cut has helped a bit but still seems to back fire a bit.

There is also a function called air temp compensation which leans out mix in hot climate and vice versa. Currently it's set to 10. The manual advises 75. Could that perhaps be part problem when the fan kicks in? The air temp rises as the sensor is in the engine bay and its quite hot at that point when the fan kicks in. Could that attribute to its seeming to flood up and drown and stall itself possibly because it needs to lean the mix off?
    Just a thought?

Not familiar with the wolf 3d, but are you able to do a datalog which captures the issues you're having? It's much easier to see what the computer's inputs and outputs are doing at the time of the issue and then come up with possible causes.

Also, if you're still getting backfires/popping with fuel cut on decel on...there must be something wrong or a leaking fuel injector as there shouldn't be anything to burn with the fuel cut off!
(Also you may want to check ignition timing under those conditions)

Yeah I was same thing as far as leak.
Ummm I think there is an option for data logging but I gotta work out how to extract it from the ecu!

My car is an factory supercharged AW11 but it also has a turbo on it. I use an Adaptronic E420c, 7MGTE injectors and waste spark ignition (RB20 coils) instead of the distributor, custom made inlet manifold. The biggest bit of fun I'm having is idle speed control when it's cold (less than say, 50-60*C on the laptop). It doesn't like to return to idle from any sort of rev. If you catch a near stall, it starts to hunt up and down, eventually stalling. After it has some heat in the engine it idles pretty good but sometimes a bit high. My throttle body is a 4AGE 1 that has been bored out to 60mm. Unfortunately it wasn't done very well and has a few leaks between the butterfly valve and the bore. I think the biggest chance of successful idle speed control would come from having the TB on the inlet manifold like the majority of engines use.
For your popping and farting on over run, make sure your low load but higher than idle speed ignition timing isn't to retarded. Above 1500rpm I'm using 20*. 2000rpm 25*. No popping and farting with the Adaptronic's over run fuel cut (cut's 0 throttle above 1600rpm, resumes at 1400rpm).

    Hey Duk,

Im pretty new at all this tuning so i cant say 100% for sure about all the settings but im in the process of learning. Ill have a look at what you say.
