TA22 Celica build. Suggestions!

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a 1973 TA22 Celica, and I want to keep the 2T that it has in it already. Now my questions are;

1. I want to upgrade the carby, what carby would you recommend for this particular engine, and is the intake manifold for that carby easy to come by?

2. I want to change over the diff to an LSD, perhaps a Hilux diff? I'm not too sure..

3. Finally, what setup would you recommend for a front end upgrade? ie: brakes, axle, etc.

Any help with these particular topics would be a great help!

...i could write a whole encyclopedia on the answers but use the search functions and just look for related threads and you should find what you are looking for. Questions like yours get asked every other week so there is definitely plenty of info out there.

First question - what are you plans for the car / engine / suspension. This all governs what you will get for the money you want to spend. Is the car for road use only, occasional track days or future serious upgrades?

Q1 - Weber 32/36 with an adaptor plate. Should be able to find one for $150-$200. Fits std manifold. Easy to tune and uses original linkages for the throttle.

Q2 - LSD is exxy or hard to swap to a non std type. Why the need anyway with a 2T. If you get the handling right you shouldn't be doing too many single spinners.

Q3 - Cheap front end upgrade is Kings / Lovells lowered springs, KYB or Koni shocks on RT132 or XT130 front struts and brakes. Whiteline heavy duty front sway bar also needs to go in. These should all be bolt in without the need for coilovers etc. Put some decent shocks in the rear and leave the rear sway bar off to allow for a little bit of roll and tyre contact with the road.

Do all this and you will have a reasonably nice driveable car at $1200 - $1500 depending on how much of this you can get 2nd hand.

You are a very useful source of information haha. The car will be for road use only, but you know, I would like the option to take it out on the track one day!

So in regards to the front end, any RT132 or XT130 struts and brakes will fit into the TA22?

There's lots of info about the mods you wish to do in these forums. Do a search and you'll find them. Also check other peoples rides and see what they have done.

iirc the early ae86 (usually refered to as zenki) lsd will fit the ta22 t series diff with very little modification. (5mm from the axels iirc?)

I wouldn't want to go the hilux diff with only a 2t. the extra weight would be more of a hindernce than anything else.
