Hi Everyone, newby here with a quick question.
I'm starting a hilux RN41 build soon and I'm looking to do an electronic ignition upgrade to the 18R motor, has anyone used one of these?
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d
Can anyone tell me if the dizzy in the earlyer motors listed has the same points cam as the one in the 18R dizzy?
I know the plate for the hall effect mount will be different but I can over come that if the trigger that goes on the dizzy shaft is likely to fit.
Thanks in advance for any insights to this question.
Tina

Thanks for that airfireman, but thats the thread that led me to find the forum.
I was hoping that the parts I linked to on ebay might be an easyer way to get rid of points.
The main question is would a trigger for an earlyer dizzy fit the points cam in an older dizzy.

Hi, I cant give a definate yes but most dizzy base plates are similar and operate in the same manner If toyota points for the 18r are the same as the points for earlier toyotas like the 3k/4k then it should not be a problem. I have got the converted dizzy as in the link and it works a treat.

get 22RE dizzi that has a vacuum advance actuator (also known as a dashpot for some reason), also grab the coil & ignitor, fit sensor plate inside 18R dizzi, replace internal top section of 18R dizzi shaft with 22RR item (gives you the trigger wheel), wire in the coil & ignitor, done.
edit: the ebay link is to a product that's probably similar to the pertronix ignitor/hall-effect sensor. I had one of these for a while. Things I disliked were:
- the magnet ring (black plastic ring thing) can sit loose over the existing lobes on the upper dizzi shaft so the timing can move about a bit.
- the sensor & basic ignitor are self-contained (if one part fails, you junk the lot) and was useless for using as a trigger for an aftermarket ECU even tho the manufacturer claimed it could be.
- requires the older coils suited to points ignition

Thanks for the input guys, looks like I'm hunting 22r ignition stuff, I was hoping that the other way might be easyer and maybe a little cheaper, but I'd rather do it once and do it right.

Yeah, that plastic ring looks poo for controlling timing, which can get out of whack with only very small movements.
Another option would be to use an aftermarket spark control unit which takes the signal from the points and creates the charge for the coil electronically. Those types of units basically make points last forever as they no longer carry any large inductive spikes.
I have used the 22R gear before, and can say that for an 18R application, they are fine. You can run into issues with it when using it for a high revving 18R-G. If your dizzy won't accept the internals of the 22R, search around, as there were a couple of types and you are bound to find one which will work. All 18R dizzies can be interchanged between engines, it is only internals which are different.
